How to convince parents I want to make skiing my winter sport

I've played hockey ever since I was 3 and next year will be my senior year of high school. I've skied my whole life but the past couple years I've gotten into it a lot more and I want to make a full commitment to skiing next winter. The problem is that my parents want me to play hockey and they don't believe that I want to hit hockey. How can I convince them I want to quit hockey and make skiing my winter sport? I think part of the problem is that they don't see skiing as a full time sport but more of a past time...idk. What are your thoughts?!

just explain to them that its what YOU would rather do with your winter, and its your life. Explain that it is still just as much of a work out as hockey if that is what they are worried about. Also they will only need to pay for a season pass, not monthly team fees for hockey so really it could be cheaper for them.

I remember having to deal with a similar situation back in High School because baseball and winter sports went head to head constantly.

Honestly, if you don't want to play, they ultimately can't force you...regardless of how bad they want one way or another.

Tell them how much money you'll be saving them, lol...hockey is expensive as all hell to begin with. Also, keep pushing the idea, show them you aren't on some new flavor of the month and this actually means a lot to you.

In the end parents want their kid to be happy, and once they see you aren't bullshitting your way out of hockey to be a "lazy stoner" (I'm sure they assume this, it's ok...all parents do) they might side with you.

In the end, don't EVER do something you don't want to do in order to make someone else happy. Fuck that.

As someone who's a good decade out of High School, I can honestly say that you shouldn't quit hockey.

You have the rest of your life to ski, it's one of those things that you will always have.

What you won't always have, is the camaraderie and memories of a team sport. It's been 10+ years since I played a team sport, but the memories I have of bus trips, big wins, and all the laughs that we shared, are as new as yesterday. It's something that I'd never give up for a season of skiing.

My advice: Stick it out a year. Have a blast, make some memories, and don't regret quitting something for one year of skiing.

Talk to them now and just be honest. I played hockey for 8 years up until my senior year when I began to hate how much pressure was put on me as a goalie and how I had to practice my ass off in order to sit on the bench for half the season. It didn't seem like I was getting as much out of the sport as what I was putting in, so I decided to give skiing a shot after seeing some cool edits I found through friends who already where involved. My parents weren't too happy with the decision either, and I don't blame them because they were the ones shelling out money for pads and coaches over the years, but they soon came around when they saw how much more fun I was having.

Looking back, my biggest regret was not doing it sooner. If you worried about giving up hockey all together, I suggest asking around and seeing if you can assistant coach a bantam team or something, you'll be surprised as to how rewarding it can be. But if skiing is truly what you want to do full-time, why wait?

Skiing is not a sport. So don't try to tell them it will be your winter sport. Tell them you'd rather ski than play hockey, pretty damn simple. Maybe offer some incentive for them, like you'll help around the house more(of course you won't actually follow through with these)

Don't be a pussy, just tell them, and if they say no, say you cant make me risk my body.

It's your senior year in highschool, and your parents are making the decisions on what sports you play. Get a job, for starters. Mommy and Daddy can pay for whatever they want.

Not if you're playing high levels. When i was playing hockey we had road trips every weekend taking up all of the weekend for one game because of the distance. Gets really really pricey.

Sucks to suck.

Its probably less than $20 to drive to the hill for me in a truck, I only got one season pass for less than $250, and I spent under $400 on gear this year.

I'd go with this. Skiing will always be there. Play competitive organized sports while you still can. After all its only one season and chances are you'll still get a handful of days at the mountain.

wow, im so glad my parents were so cool with me quitting hockey to ski full time in the winter. sure they " made " me do the mogul team, but seeing as how only the mogul kids on the team got to hit jumps without getting thier pass pulled, i was down to ruin my knees for a few years to show them , im serious bout doing this all winter, and as much as i love hockey , a couple weekened warrior trips a year just wasnt making me happy. i also was given a sick set up ( purple 1080s, 1080 boots, etc ) so that helped as they could see i was serious bout getting my own gear , even without their help, and i was like in 4th or 5 th grade. i was on the travel team for hockey ( where the better players get stuck) , and alot of those hockey trips were no more expensive than if we were to go skiing , so as a 4th grader i explained and showed my rents my gear and that was it. dad said if you want it that bad wich i see you do, go for it, i just want you to do freestyle for a year or two and see if you really like it... well i did, did moguls for a bit, then turned to freeride and it twas best decision i ever made. and btw still love hockey .

They dont want you to quit probably because they dont want to buy all new gear for you, If you really want to ski in the winter get a fucking job and pay all that shit yourself, show them hoe fucking dedicated you are to ski and stop whining to them that you want change sports

just quit, come home and tell them you quit. what are they going to do honestly? your coach will have heard it from you so he knows it's your choice so if your parents tried to pull some shit he'd know it was your choice. parents like this bug me out, kind like they're trying to relive their glory days through their kid. it's not like you're quitting hockey for nothing, hopefully they'll see you replaced it with something you love just as much if not more.

My parents didn't give a shit what I chose to do as a kid as long as I was staying active throughout the year. They fully supported my skiing and snowboarding all through school. Plus I thought team sports were fucking garbage.

fill my car with 60$ and i can make it to and from my hill over 20 times.

work at the hill = free pass

and once you have enough equiptment theres reall no need to spend money every season on the "newest hippest" shit

I though this thread was titled how to conceive while parents are skiing. I really excited.

OP try to find some sort of ski program, like a team or something, and tell your parents you will do that.

You can usually find a mountain that has a cheap or free shuttle, and if you can't its not hard to carpool. Also why the fuck do you need 2 season passes? Plus if you just get a job at the mtn thats a free season pass, and usually enough money to cover gas and an easy way to find carpool and skiing buddies. Lastly you don't buy all your shit in one year, and if you do you skimp on some things. By going to ski swaps and finding cheap shit, you can put together almost everything for under $1000.

All in all, either you're exaggerating your costs, or you're an idiot.

just tell them hockey doesn't make you happy the way it used to, and skiing has now taken it's place. if they can't see that skiing is more fun to you/makes you happier than playing hockey, then i am sorry.

I quit hockey for skiing. But my coach was like 5 ft nothing and I was 6-5 and he hated me because I was a somewhat dirty player. I got suspended in a town league for an incident right before HS season and when he found out and tried to make me start Jr year on JV I told him to fuck himself and did skiing.

My advice: It will work both ways quitting though so try to do both as much as you can. Be honest of where your skiing is and if you will be good enough to race for your school.

Worked out for the best ski-wise . I got race skis and manned up and made sure I was going to start every race for my school and finish in the points. And I did and made states 2 years. And despite not skiing much from age 18-25 I never sucked and once I was able to ski a ton more and slay real shit like Kirkwood, Cham, Rose Chutes, Verbier on powder days I was as as good as anyone not sponsored or a pro and . So doing HS skiing allowed me to still be good despite only maybe 3 weeklong trips and 5 or 6 random East Coast days total over those 7-8 years of college and right after college.

Hockey wise it sucks that I didn't play competitive hockey as an adult. I was always good growing up. Now I am slow as shit and can only get my shot off and play well against people who suck. If I had kept playing HS and done club in college or shitty D3 (club hockey was gay at my school and a wanna be frat) I wouldn't be amazing but I'd be able to keep up with the good people who played D1/some pros. But I can't skate with anyone that is actually good I suck too much. I love hockey and skate 2-3 times a week when I am home so I wish I was better and not playing hardly at all from 16-21 had a negative effect for sure.

do you play house league hockey or something?
and my season pass is $20 because a work at the hill. it is 11k from my house, so it costs barely anything to drive there and back. also, pro tip: you shouldn't need to spend 1500+ on equipment every year

I had played hockey my whole life and every season in high school I wanted to quit to ski full time. My parents wanted me to play hockey because it was great for my college application. I also played in the band despite not wanting to, played another varsity sport I also wanted to quit, had leadership positions in school clubs I wasn't interested in, and volunteered for stuff I didn't care about, all to get into a top college.

Because I stuck with all these commitments I was able to get into my top choice college. Once I received my early decision acceptance letter in the late fall of senior year I quit hockey, stopped volunteering, and quit my other sport. I skied every other day after that and senior year ended up being the best year of my life.

I spent 10 years playing hockey and after quitting I haven't been on ice since and although I had fun times playing my two sports I don't miss them or wish I kept with them at all. Some people look back fondly on their high school sports but most people don't continue to play them in college and beyond. I also don't ski nearly as much as I used to from 40+ days a season to now <10.

If I went back to freshman year of high school I wouldn't change a thing.

A little more background..........One reason i dislike hockey so much is that our coaches are incredibly shitty, we honestly do the same thing every day and do not get better throughout the season. Don't tell me to "suck it up" because i've dealt with that for 3 years and it just keeps getting more unbearable. Along with that i used to love hockey because it was competitive and fun, but now its just a chore. I enjoy competition but i've gotten burned out from playing so much hockey that i dont see it as fun anymore.

My parents dont want me to quit because i've played it my whole life and they would be sad if i didnt play because it means so much to them. They also think i would be letting down my teamates by quitting. Personally i think i should be able to do what i want and I dont really give a shit if my teammates feel let down because it's my life and ill be miserable the whole winter if i play hockey. Call me selfish but thats what i think.

Carpool with other people I spent maybe $5-$10 every time I went (50 minutes away) and I would go about 5 times a week.
And a seasons pass for $300
The only thing I bought this year were new snowpants ($120), a new helmet after I cracked mine ($90), I got drunk and lost my mittens ($40), some used bindings ($40 + $15 to mount) and traded a bottle of whiskey for two pairs of poles.

You sir need to learn how to make your stuff last, and how to find deals. If you spend that much every year on gear that's obscene.

But in all seriousness, play Midgets hockey, goes up to 18, get ur love of the game in from August to November. I dont even bother playing HS hockey, for 1 skiing is what i do, but 2 my high school has the best team in MA. But i love to play and find time for both skiing and hockey. Its not hard to do at all. Join a mens league at night if u want. Skiing is something that you can do for a lifetime, hockey u honestly can not. Just do both in my opinion.

tell them you love skiing and you will still play shinny and go to the odr (outdoor rink) and if you miss it too much after the season you will restart next year, good luck, i went from playing competitive for 5 years then started loving skiing so went house league for 2, that 2nd year of house leaugue i had like no friends on my team then i quit for the season that just passed and got a lot more skiing in and didnt miss hockey much, good luck man

many colleges have freestyle teams. If you can do it as a sport in college they may be more reseptive. The biggest problem you have is that you are a high schooler which means that your arguing skills go out the window when you get angry. You tend to take your toys and go home, which leads to your parents thinking its just a phase or you arent mature enough to make the decision. I would tell them that as you have come to this point in your hockey career you have had less and less motivation to get good at it. It is requiring too much of your time to experience your senior year and your real passion which is skiing. You intend to progress at skiing and train for it. You would like to take part in collegiate freestyle team of the school you attend. Do your research here before you use this point. If you can varify your points then your parents must take your research as solid bc they have not researched it. this provides you the upper hand. The other important aspect to remember is that even if they are not reseptive to the idea, being mature when they say no allows you to have this conversation at a later date again. You want to make adult decisions, make your argument in an adult way. You may be surprised.

My hill is 42 miles away and my escort gets ~40mpg... Costs me $10 to drive to and from.

Yup being 9 years outta hs I would 100% agree with this dude. Stick hockey out. Skiing is always there. Organized sports aren't.

Note: there are other organized sports out of hs but it is not the same.
