Everybody has that group of kids in your high school that walk around with their beepers 24/7 like champs. Lets give them some respect. My HS volunteer firefighters/ems

Hell yeah I know a few kids who do that, props to them for sure. Not many people do that.

I wish I could do that. Pretty sure the fire department here doesn't do anything like that though.

Work with a lot of volunteer fire fighters. Most of them are in patrol and I have a few liftys that are volunteer. Been thinking of going for volunteer firefighting when I find a place that I'm settled down at. Already have some rescue and first responder training.

There's not a whole lot more honorable than volunteering with your local fire station. My cousin is the deputy chief in Kelowna. We got together for a family reunion last week and he was telling me some horror stories about calls he got. I don't know how they can do it. After every call they have a psychiatrist come in and have them talk in a group setting. Crazy shit dealing with suicides and accidents. Somebody needs to do it though.

unfortunately my school does not have that group of kids. Im afraid we dont even have one kid. But awesome thread none the less.

Don't let that put you off if you actually think you'd make a good firefighter. It's the best job in the world. Sure there are some horrible incidents but I'd say its pretty rare to go to anything like your roommate was talking about. On my old station I worked with had guys who had 30+ years on the job and whilst there were some nasty stories 99% of their experiences were positive.

The feeling you get when you save someone's life is incredible. Nothing compares to it. Sure, fighting fires is only a small part of the job today but you do still get to do it!

Ive been a volunteer firefighter/emt for 5 years now. One of the most rewarding things ever. My department does around 700 fire/ems calls a year, split 50/50. I have seen some crazy, fucked up stuff, but there have been some amazingly awesome times as well. Bedford Fire Department (NY) represent.

In Southern California they are generally all city/county employees and are paid an annual median salary of $100k including a very nice pension. Obviously it's highly competitive.
