Stencils? (graffiti)

So in the next couple weeks I'm gonna do a pretty big stencil (about 6 foot by 5 foot with some free hand around it) and I was looking for some tips. I know at least some people on NS gotta tag, and I just needed some help.

First question is stencil material. I'm thinking either cardboard or posterboard for the actual stencil. I dont know what else would hold up to something that big. Any suggestions?

Next is what paint. I heard valspar is the best as far as price and quality. I'm not so much worried about price, because its just one piece I'm gonna do, and I want it to look good. Also, thats just for the stencil part, if theres a better paint for free handing around, let me know.

Last part is just some tips for tagging. I'm gonna do it in a concrete lined drainage ditch where theres some other tags, so I know its possible. Its between the freeway and a waterpark (which is why I wanna do it. It'll get noticed) But the park has security at night roaming and i dont know if they will be able to hear the cans rattle or not, I dont think so, but not sure. Any other tips for any of it would be awesome too.

First of all, shout out to Reno. I've been to that waterpark more times than I can count.

For the paint, don't use Valspar. That stuff is terrible, low in pigment, fades, and runs like shit. I use Belton Molotow Premium and ironlak brands of paint. Buy paint off of artprimo.com. it's a specialized graffiti store and they carry everything you're going to need. Look into low pressure cans. You don't want spray going under the stencil.
As for what material to use for the stencil itself, try and stay away from cardbord as much as you can. It's difficult to get clean, crisp lines, high detail, etc. Use a medium thickness posterboard, manilla, etc. Stapels and Office Depot should have what youre looking for.
When you go out and paint, wear a face mask, all black or dark colors, carry a handbag to keep the cans in for fast access as opposed to a backpack. Shake the cans in an area close enough to the bank but far enough away that people wont hear. I put magnets on the bottom of my cans to keep the rattle balls in place and to keep my noise down when I go out.
Be keen, smart, quiet, and swift. Get in and get out asap (duh). Take pictures of your shit so we can see your work!

Thanks dude! I wanted to hit that up for so long because hella people see it from the towers. It's pretty out of the way too. I got posterboard and I'm gonna rasterize my image and cut out the stencil. Will the stencil be too big for that?
Also, anywhere in town that would have high quality paint like that? I'm gonna need it in like a week. The park isn't open full time yet so I found out there won't be security during the week. I'll probably go with the magnets too. Forgot about that. I'm gonna have a driver and lookout and I have a couple plans for gettin out too. Also, how do I keep the stencil down while I'm painting? I heard spray adhesive or painter tape. I need something to stick it to concrete. Thanks for the help too!

And to the other person, it's not so much tagging as much as it will be art. I'm blowing up one of my drawings and making it a stencil, it's not some stupid name you can't read it'll look cool.

And I will deliver pics within the next few weeks

post the drawing youre blowing up for us to see. better be some banksyesque shit. also pics or it diddnt happen, so bring a light if youre tagging at night, and remember to sign your full name.

I drew this a couple months ago and augured it would look sick. I'm gonna paint the background white one night, let it dry, freehand the orange, then stencil the girl. It's gonna be about 7 or 8 feet wide/tall. Below is original drawing, and my tag
And I hope nobody does. It's out of the way, not damaging anything, and it's not stupid. It's legit art.

sick. it looks pretty proportional too and the orange shading is good. you could expand the waist of the female figure and maybe rework the lower half of the dress for improvement. threads for pics when done. im a bit of a drawfag

Uhm.. please take the crown off of your tag. Although I don't know you personally, but it appears you haven't earned it.


Also do your homework! find others in your area that get up and talk to them too. Much luck man, threads for picks when it's up.

And I've talked to some other kids that tag, but they go up to this abandoned mine processing plant where everyones tagged for like 50 years. Nothing even close to having a chance of getting caught. They also only do freehand, no stencils

Ahh I see, they're more like traditional graff..

any way, if you're serious about doing stencils, check out the book Stencil Nation by Russell Howze. Its full of phenomenal artists and the last 10 or so pages are all artists tips and tricks. It's worth the read.

Thanks man! I'll look it up right now.
And I'm just sticking to stencils right now because it's a little easier with the stud I already have, I'll probably do some more freehand too.
I just don't want people to start hating and say I'm copying banksy or anything like that

No problem man, stoked to see the end result.
No shops carry Montana, ironlak, etc. You gotta shop online for that. It's worth the money man. Some of my tags which have been up for over a year, that are facing south in full sun all day, in red paint, are still just as vibrant as the day they were put up.
Good call on the driver and back-up, always a safe bet. Be wary of using cars, for the police can get personal information a hell of a lot easier from the plates than they can from seeing you without a car. I use gorilla tape or the help of a friend. spray adhesive works alright too if the medium your going to be painting on isn't too rough or porus.

it's not bad, not the sickest I've seen but a solid start! good detail. add a background color and highlight stencils. like a layer of different colors or shades

As far as the cans making noise try sticking magnets to them depending on the balls inside it might help. I like using poster board and spray glue to stick it up. Just enough to get it to stick but not enough that you cant get it off. Good luck

Its technically not the waterpark. Its city property in the concrete lined ditch next to it. Its sick though because you cant see it from the street (cops) but you can see it from in the park (tons of people)
