I honestly thing the pats would have scored anyways, but obviously thats just a guess and has no real impact on anything.
Yes the PI against the browns was a bad call and handed hte patriots a win, yes the PI/holding by the panthers was a bad no call and handed carolina the win. The thing with bad calls is over the course of a season they usually even out.
An important distinction here is not whether the patriots are/aren't getting screwed and conspiracy theories blah blah blah...it's the effect the home crowd has on officials in tight situations. There have been numerous studies that show officials are very swayed by a home crowd. If the NE/CAR is at gillette, pats get that whistle in the endzone. If the pats are playing in cleveland last weekend, they do not get that PI call and receive the ball on the one to win the game
also, while the defenseless receiver call on edelman was a bad call it absolutely looked like 100% right call from the back judges perspective. He was standing right under the goal post and was partially shielded by edelman making the completely legal hit look absolutely vicious. Not the correct call obviously but I think it's hard to fault the back judge when the only perspective he had looked like an easy call. Could the other refs counter? Of course and they should have, but are they going to pick up a flag IN gillette? No of course not, just like they're going to pick up a flag IN carolina
