That would be because you, like most ignorant Americans, think that republicans and democrats are representative of actual political left and right ideologies. In reality both republicans and democrats tend to be center right, with republicans being slightly more to the right in some issues. I personally think that both political parties have some good and a lot of really bad ideas; although I typically vote democratic because their views align slightly more with mine and modern republicans have gone off the deep end supporting both hopelessly unrealistic and naive economic/ governmental policies and unacceptably restrictive social policy.
The US desperately needs to loose the two party system because IMO no educated adult should support every aspect of both the democrat's and the republican's platforms, there's too much stupidity on both sides. 4 or 5 parties would at least allow some mixing and matching of ideologies.
Personal responsibility and liberty, governmental oversite of big business (which is way scarer than the government) and areas like the environment and education that industry and the free market wont adequately address, and unrestrictive social policies ftw!
