A Mayan pyramid that has stood for 2,300 years in Belize has been reduced to rubble, apparently to make fill for roads Local media in the Central American country of 334,000 people report the temple at the Noh Mul site in northern Belize was largely torn down by backhoes and bulldozers last week. obviously not cool but the whole issue runs deeper. when is something so important that you cant tear it down and rebuild it? what about all the beautiful (or even the not so beautiful) nature that made way for all our cultural things. who says that is cool?

not saying that this wasnt (probably) unnecessary, but its very hard to draw ONE LINE to decide all preservation cases.

Why the fuck would you ever tear down an important piece of history like that? I'm surprised there wasn't some kind of law protecting it.

You can plant a pine tree anywhere. You can't rebuild a Mayan ruin in 5 years, definitely not the same.

A trip to natgeo's website told me the ruins were under protection of the government but on private land. One would think a site like that would be under watch and something like this couldn't happen. I know it's belize and not the US but still, what's going on?

I've spent some time in Detroit and was constantly hearing about what to do with the abandoned buildings. It's not quite the same thing but I definitely have a better understanding of situations like these because of it.

Looks like it was in pretty bad condition, just an overgrown mound. Nothing that would attract tourists, nothing that was visited by locals for religious or traditional purposes. If they really cared the government could have bought the land from the guy sometime over the past 2300 years.
