Many early religious figures can be regarded as having three main ideals. God, Greed and Glory. On the face of it they put God forward as their number one priority. They wanted the world to know that they were bringing the word of God to 'damned' people simply out of the goodness of their heart.
Where Power and Greed came in was from when the catholic church, allegedly, had started to become corrupt. Vatican City knew that striking fear into people was a good way of controlling them and getting them to pay 'indulgences' (buying yourself into heaven). This system worked and thus people were exploited for about 1500 years.
I could go on, but Im tired and you should think for yourself.
