How to mount pvc?

I have a 2in. Diameter tube of pvc, and I want to mount it to a 3 1/2 in board, how do I do that?

But what about screw heads sticking up, wouldn't that cause problems?

Use a drill bit and drill a larger hole in the top, do that down the PVC. Use a smaller bit to drill through the large hole to start another one at the bottom into your board (This hole is to prevent cracking in the pipe when putting the screw in. Not completely necessary but it sucks when the pipe racks around the screw). Then using an extension drill the screw into the pipe into the board.

The problem with mounting the PVC from bottom upwards is it is a lot more weak and can crack as mentioned before. It is easier but not as efficient.

I should mention that the first hole doesn't have to be huge just enough to fit the extension and bit/screw through, so maybe 2/3 sizes bigger than the second bit.

ive done both methods, the from the top way is more secure but takes much more work, in my opinion the from the bottom way works fine and is much easier so i would go with it

I used the edge of a 2x4 and cut it into a U shape with a router, then slid 3 inch pieces of steel tubing with pre-drilled holes into the pvc and bolted into the pieces of steel.

that way the pvc is cradled by the 2x4 and pinched by the steel, no stress points whatsoever.

Do not do it from the bottom, it is insanely weak.

I forget who said it above, but drilling from the top and countersinking the top hole is the best way to go. So much more secure and it will last for a long time. The holes on top do not effect how is slides.

Do you have a picture of this? I am very confused. I don't think too many people have the equipment to drill through steel, let alone have a router.

so like when i countersink it should i off set the holes so they arent on the verytop of the tube? or does that not matter

Drill holes on the sides of a pvc so a wrench will fit though the hole to hold the top of a bolt. Drill holes under so the bolts can fit sung. Depending on how soft the pvc is you maybe want to use washes so you may really tighten them down (this step can be annoying and frustrating). Use the same size drill bit to drill though the 2x4 and use a washer between the wood and nut.

From the bottom is plenty strong, I've never pulled out a pipe and I've had my rails for a few years now.

Nope, having the holes on top do not affect sliding at all, no need to off centre it.

lay the board on top of the pvc then drill 3 holes threw the wood and pvc. one in front one in the middle one at the end. then get 3 decent bolt. tighten the bolts and that pvc will never move. from the wood

take a narrow strip of board and put it inside the pipe. Then screw a board the same width as the pipe onto the bottom of the pipe, screwing through the board and pvc, into the strip of wood inside the pipe. Put some little scraps of wood on the sides so the pipe won't tip side to side, kind of like when you put blocks of wood behind a tire on a trailer so it won't roll (it shouldn't, but it never hurts to take precautions), and then screw the board onto the 2bi4 or whatever you made the framework for the rail out of. You don't end up with any holes in the top of the rail, and I've never split or cracked a pipe this way. I've made countless pvc rails, and they have all held up just fine.

Drill holes through the pvc into the board, then countersink your screws into the top part of the pvc so they're either flush with or below the level of the pvc. You would think that you would catch an edge when you slide across these little dips, but it's never happened to me. Also the rail has stayed in place on the board really well. You'll need to swap out the drill bit a few times, but I think it's worth the effort to do it right.

If your only using one pvc pipe you have to screw in from the top for it to be sturdy enough. If you are using two you can drill holes in the side and actually screw the two pvc pipes together using short screws then drill from the bottom and it is very sturdy.
