well it's awesome, but I'll need more samples to see if it's worth buying a stupid fast card to try it out. And then i wouldnt be able to store much footage for it to be useful for much

Thread already exists but I must far behind.
My thoughts are that I read that the camera's processor might heat a little too much and that you better the best CF card to support such ratio. But in it self, the idea is totally awesome and progressive !

just read on eoshd that continuous recording is supported and while it is very new, it will be ported to 6d, 5d mark ii, and 600d. Here is the link incase anyone wants to read more on it.

Can anyone explain why you'd be able to use the t3i but not the t2i? aren't they very similar, like same sensor and everything?

UHS-I defines interface speeds up to 104MB/sec.

In theory it is supported.

the t4i is the first of the rebels to support UHS SD cards, so I'm pretty sure it would be the rebel to get this ported to it

I don't really care for this directly. The thing that I DO like is what this means for the next year or two. In two years even the noobiest camera's are going to be able to shoot 720p/1080p RAW for a really good price. I think it's great what the guys at ML are doing.

also, this makes it a little more worth it to get a t4i, I guess... seeing as they have the better processor - which makes no sense in that camera unless you're able to do this, I suppose.

Really cool feature, but I don't think people understand the bit rate is almost 100mbps meaning you're gonna fill up a 1tb drive after a week of shooting. Everyone is so hyped on RAW but seem to forget how much of a pain it can be.

Seeing how memory isn't all that expensive anymore, it's definitely not that bad... 1tb usually runs around 60-70 bucks now, so for a couple hundo, you can basically build a raid stack...

the real issue is how expensive cards are, and how fast you'll fill a card by running raw...

but... for the quality you already get from .mov files and such, really, there's no reason to even think about doing this for the grand majority of folks. The flexibilities being opened up, however are really cool, if anything.

Sorry I should have said, I meant how long before people will be able to shoot raw as though it's non raw, like they are now, I'm wording this terribly. How long before memory is cheap enough that raw is the standard.

not that big of a pain, I've been shooting 2-3tb's a day of arri raw. I was still able to back it up and deliver it for post within 5hrs. Couldn't be done without Thunderbolt though

This. But since the past 10 years, cameras, codecs, ratios etc have become so much more accessible for any landa person. It all depends on how and what you want to use it for.

Played around with a DNG file (was able to sustain 1920x720 on a 60MB/s card just fine) and it edits just like a raw photo out of cam. So much DR it's pretty sick

What i'm saying is some joe blow with a t3i will install this raw hack and will probably never use it because his 500gb WD drive got filled after a week.


I think RAW has its place but I wouldn't shoot skiing in any RAW format thats for sure, if anything a p2 codec or xf codec would be nice but i dont need a full on RAW workflow for skiing. If you're shooting short films or something and really wanna manipulate your image, sure RAW would be nice but I have no desire to do such things to ski footage.

That being said, I really want a pocket BMCC but i doubt id used it much for skiing.

Seeing how there's very little shadows in skiing the added DR isn't nearly as important as it is with movies. I agree with Evan, for the ski industry this isn't really too important.

What i am trying to say is that the use of video technology has become so easy for anybody. People like ML are pushing the limits of our cameras so everyone might just say "all I have to do is download this thing and it will be nicer" without thinking of how or why to use it, unlike what you just did in fact, you simply know what RAW is and why to use it or not in a workflow, you established that for skiing you won't use it, but only experienced people can take or not take tchnological improvements.

ahhh well, sometimes you get very dark backgrounds. Ive noticed the higher DR on my fs100 vs say a canon dslr or my old hvx and its nice for when a skier has earth toned clothing with a brown/green/tan/black background.

I think you just like to argue for the sake of arguing sometimes. I feel like there could definitely be some use in skiing, likely not for anyone but anyone more involved in making flicks could put it to some use.

I just installed it on my 5Dmk3 and its incredible. However workflow will be fun...
I'm using it for a shoot tomorrow. Ordered some 128GB CF cards... Should be interesting.

Ok, to break this down because i was mega confused


5d h264 = 24mbps which = 3MBps

5d raw = 786mbps = 96MBps


A 128GB CF card will hold ~24 mins of raw 5d footage.

That res in insane! I would love to try one shoot with this to get my head around it but I know the practicality of it for me for general shoots is probably too much. Still awesome though!

It can't be right. Supposedly 128GB CF card will hold 15 minutes of footage. I'll look at my fines tomorrow when I test it with a 1000x card rather then a 400x.

hmm i saw this info on dvxuser (the aprox time)

if i do the math, at 96MBps 24mins of footage is 138,240MB or 138gb so maybe more like 20 minutes?

Yeah that sounds about right. Either way, like you said before, you need a lot of space to shoot in RAW.

I want to install it but I'm pretty nervous about bricking my cam lol. Ill probably wait until I can easily install but as much as I hate to say it, I would love to film a wedding in raw with the right venue or conditions. For promo purposes hah
