So, next season me and my mate are going to out to Whistler to become ski instructors and just to shred for a year! Im looking at going to UBC afterwards so might be staying out there, we're from the UK. I like shooting video and am looking at getting a good DSLR camera but don't really know what i need! I use a GoPro Hero 3 at the moment for any action stuff like boarding and skiing when i go on a holiday but i want to get a decent camera for next year. I want to be using for photos and video so both aspects similarly important. I have been looking at the Canon line up and they look decent like the 650d 600d and 60d and then the Sony Nex-5N looks nice as well but can someone who know about camera gear advise me on where i should be looking for a Beginner. I don't want a beginner camera though not something so shit i will want to upgrade straight away i have a whole summer to earn money for whistler so can put a decent amount in. Also i know what sort of camera i need but i have literally know idea about lenses! What the numbers mean which ones are good and what are necessary because i presume the entry level lens kits are pretty crappy!
QUESTIONAIRE:
1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?
I dont have the money at the moment but i am looking to spend around 600 and maybe more as i will working before i go away!
2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?
I make videos for youtube playing live music and i have used a mates canon 60d for a day and got kinda familiar on with automatic stuff though and i have a gopro hero 3!
2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)
Gopro Hero 3, a good manfrotto tripod and loads of go pro accessories.
4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)
Skiing, Inside on music gear shots for my youtube videos, Photos on the mountain and just for regular use.
5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?
My Friend i am going with is massively into his camera mainly for photos so i would hand it to him because he knows his shit but not many others really.
6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)
Followcam and film from tripod but mainly followcam i would think but i do want this for inside shots (for music stuff) so tripod for that.
7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.
Because of my music i have a pretty spec'd up mac it is Macbook Pro 15", !6gb RAM, i7 2.33GHZ, and i have a 2tb Harddrive and a smaller 500gb both external and 500 internal.
7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)
After effects im further than just learning but not a fully comfortable user!
