Long boarding question...

So I asked my friend who works at a shop that sells long boards what a good set up for a little sliding and freeriding. His response was "anything sector 9, just buy one". I don't know much about long boarding but I'm almost positive that the design of the board matters, when I asked him he said "are you joking? The board doesn't matter at all it only matters how soft or hard your wheels are". Anyways I just thought I would ask how much the board itself matters, and maybe a suggestion for a set up. Thanks guys.

your friend is half retarded. yes the softness matters but the board is a BIG deal. i have a pretty stiff drop through sliding then a couple other softer boards for everything else.

Board shape definitely matters. For freeride you will probably want a stiff symmetrical board. I would look at nelson longboards, I'm extremely happy with my Tempest for freeride. There are many other good board makers, check out http://www.edgeboardshop.com/. I would stay away from Sector Nine and Original.

For trucks i would go with 50 calibers. For wheels you cant go wrong with 81a flashbacks. For bearings go Zealous.

Boards shape definitely effect how the board will ride. If you want a good board I would recomend something other than sector 9 because most of their decks suck.

Check out the Original Freeride 41. Its stiff and symmetrical so its perfect to learn to freeride and progress on. Throw on some 50* caliber trucks and sector 9 butterball and you have the perfect board for what you want to do.

I work at Zumiez and I can tell you no one at my store would ever give this kind of advice. The majority of us who do longboard don't even own longboards that we carry.

Butterballs wear way too fast IMO. Free ride 41 isn't bad. I personally ride a OS Arbiter with 50 Cals and tweakers/volatnes

sorry for double post but OS has a new Kicktail proto, similar to the arbiter with a bigger kick, but less concave. I rode it and its sweet

What you want to consider is whether you want a top mount, drop deck, drop through, or drop deck and drop through.

Also wheel hardness is much less of a factor versus skill and technique. I slide all over on 78a wheels. How the wheel is shaped and the urethane compound type is important too.

It's like skiing in that, until you do it for a bit you won't know if you like stiff skis or soft ones, tight or long turn radii, fat or skinny skis, all that stuff.

Get a Kracked Skull, cheap and great boards, plus they come with the same trucks as a loaded. If your budget is low i would recommend a kracked skull but if not id go with a loaded for the purposes youre looking for.

i wanna try one. i have a tan tien which is way too soft and a shorter sector 9 for getting around campus, but nothing for harder riding

So what, you're going to tell a potential customer dont buy our shitty decks, go order a landyacthz? No. Of course you know the cheapo sec. 9 and arbor's aren't going to be what anyone past a first time longboarder wants, but you're not going to say it.

this or churchill mfg. I'm personally going to be getting a crystal from churchill eventually when I get employed. The drop down really keeps your feet on the board. I currently have a landyatchz switch and that thing is never going to let your feet go and it hauls ass. For me it feels weird though and uncomfortable for really long bomb runs.

the super model is harder then a pedo at a kindergarten swimming class. mine looks sick as fuck, too.
i got the black on black deck with black trucks and yellow wheels. my friends dubbed it the "bat board".
