Please Critique my photo portfolio. I realize the action section is lacking, but i really like some of the shots in life and travel. lemme know what you think
If this is a portfolio, it's WAY too big. A portfolio should be for showcasing your work. Your BEST work. You probably have 40-50 pictures in there. Cut it down by about half. Of course there's shots that are better than others, but the difference between a lot of shots is too great. I would recommend putting 5/6 pictures in every section. That way you only have to use your best pictures; you'll look like a better photographer.
The Life/Travel section: first thing that catches my eye is that all (or almost all) shots are from NYC. Your profile reads you're from NH, so I take it you shot those pics on a trip to the Big Apple. Try using shots from other stuff. If you feel like other work isn't up to par, heavily edit (and by editing I mean selecting work, not photoshopping) your shots down to only couple. It's ok (or better really, see above paragraph) to have fewer shots. Also, there's 3 shots of Grand Central, two are almost identical.
Make sure your whitebalance is correct. A couple shots seem a little too warm. Shoot in RAW and you have full control over this in post.
Portraits: There's 11 shots in this section. In 4 the back of the head is photographed. In 3 the subject isn't looking at the camera and one has his face covered up by a balaklava. That leaves you with 4 pics (out of 11) where the subject is looking into the camera. I'm not saying only those last 4 qualify as being a portrait because the person is looking into the camera, but it's something to think about. Once again: edit (make selections) your work. I really like the old(er) man staring into the camera; good shot. The boy sitting on the skateboard, not so much...
Nature: I really like this section. Definitely your best overall. Look out for straight horizons. Some seem to be just a tad off. Really like the colors of these pics to. They work and the post-processing is on point. The only shot where the colors are just plain bad is the last shot with the binoculars or whatever you call 'em in english. It's way green/blueish. Unpleasing.
Action: I really like the third shot. The lighting from the back is cool. Nice composition too. The second shot could do with a little closer action to the camera. The fourth shot has way too strong a vignette. Tone that down a little. In the last shot the skater is facing away, I don't know if you knew this was going to happen beforehand, but try make sure you always see the face of the skater; also, it's really unclear what the skater is going to do/where he's going to land. Try incorporating that in your frame.
All in all you're doing great! The biggest thing right now is that you have to cut down on a LOT of shots. After that, try making every section one thing; as in: try matching the colors a little and keep and eye out of not repeating shots/overlapping shots that are too much alike.
I generally like your colors (especially in the Nature section), but almost all shots could do with a little sharpening. I don't what program you use, but use some sharpening techniques to make your images a little more crisp.
In Lightroom (LR), try playing with the 'clarity' slider, just make sure you counter it a little with bringing your contrast down. Under the 'detail' heading, there's a REALLY powerfull sharpening tool. Look up a video on Youtube on how to sharpen your image using those sliders.
If you're using Photoshop, I really like the High Pass filter. Same thing: watch a video on YT on how High Pass sharpening works.
