Upgrade after Canon T2i +k response

Hello NSers, I was wondering what you would all recommend as a sensible upgrade from the T2i, yes I search barred and couldn't find anything, so I thought I would come to you guys.

I have been considering 60D and 7D but I have also heard that the video quality is very similar in both of those cameras and the T2i. I have also heard that investing in nicer glass is also something to consider. I'm just looking for something to up my film game and progress some more, not sure if I have maxed out the potential with a T2i but check out my edit just to have an idea where I'm at skill wise. Thanks guys let me know wheat you think!

Unless you're looking for super slow mo, you should buy some new glass, a good tripod, a glidecam, not a new body (especially a 60d/7d, why people think that is a step up video-wise from a t2i i have no idea). it will likely not help you step up your game, like eheath said, experiment, try some new stuff. A t2i should be totally fine for video.

Alright thanks guys, I guess I need to try some new stuff and experiment. So Im thinking I need to invest in a nice tripod, I have a pretty shitty one right now, and I already have a glidecam too. So maybe come new glass and fresh ideas!

There is no way you've maxed out your potential on the T2i. 'upgrading' to a 60D or a 7D would be only if you had good crop glass and wanted something easier to use for still photography. Other than that, they have exactly the same sensor, and video capabilities.

maybe invest in new glass or stabilizers or something, but a new body is absolutely not worth it at this point.

The main thing is just being more creative and getting different angles and experimenting with stuff. If you were to upgrade I don't know why you'd go with a 60d or 7d over a gh2/gh3 (or the new black magic pocket cam).

Okay yah anew body doesn't seem to be the answer, thanks for the help guys, I was thinking about picking up a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, anyone have any strong opinions on this lens, for a nice walk around lens.

It's either that, or skip to a wide angle zoom like one of the Tokinas... the 11-18 f2.8 would be preferable for low light situations obviously, but the 12-24 f4 gives you a little more zoom wiggleroom (24mm is a little longer than 35mm equivalent, so it can be used as a wide standard length), is cheaper by about 100 bucks or more, and is just as distortion free...

I personally don't have a fast standard zoom, but I have 3 different fast primes to cover the range. (I pretty much stick to a 28mm f2 for this)

I'm in a similar situation, but I'm looking to upgrade from a canon T3. What would you guys suggest for an upgrade? I was thinking T4i or 60d but I'm not totally sure... I do 75 percent pics and like 25 video. Sorry for the minor thread jack

T4i is a worthless 'upgrade' as nothing legitimate really changed from a T3i.

Here are the reasons to get a 60D or a 7D over a rebel.

Both have better viewfinders. 7D has weather protection (60D is also better build quality), and both have a secondary selection wheel, whereas the rebels have lame buttons for exposure control. 7D has a 8 fps burstmode, 60D shoots just over 5, and the rebels are just plain slow. Both have better AF than the T3i (although, I think the T4i and the 60D have the same AF... anyone care to check that for me?)

Ultimately, if you're just shooting video, a rebel is fine, but if you're shooting a lot of photos and/or sports stuff (IE: skiing photos) you'd want at least a 60D if you can. If not, do what I did, and get a used T2i (just the T3i/T4i without a flip screen) in great condition for about 350, and get something like a used 30D (think of it like a 60D without the flipscreen or video mode - shoots just as fast burstrate and same body construction/feel) in likely solid condition for 150-200$. Considering what the T4i/T5i/whatever cost brand new, you could get two cameras (or at least close to two) for the price, and then that's all you'd likely ever need forever.

I'm upgrading from a T3, not a t3i. I want to get 720p at 60fps for video as well as a better sensor and burst rate for photos

If you want continuous burstrate, don't go with a rebel. Go with at least a 60D. You need at least a 5fps burst to make it worth shooting sports with, IMO.

That's what I was thinking of, I can get the body on amazon for 700 and I already have some canon glass so I would be good to go there. How long would I expect the 60d to last before becoming outdated?

I have a Sigma 10-20mm right now so I have the wide angle covered, I know its not quite as nice as the Tokina 11-16 but I didn't quite have the funds at the time and I actually like the sigma quite a bit.

How do you like your 28mm f2?

Lens isn't bad. Just really slow at 20mm end... I'm sure it works fine for ski stuff on sunny days where you can stop down to f5.6, and landscapes though.

Loooove my 28 f2. Fantastic for photos and video. Only thing I have against it is that it requires a bit of distortion correction for photos, being its a 28mm made for 35mm film - so the behavior is slightly different when used as a crop standard.

what do you think about buying FD mount lenses and using an adapter, I know there is a level of distortion to it but is it maybe worth the savings to find one on ebay? I have a 50mm 1.8 FD for the t2i with an adapter and I actually like how it looks, even with the crop factor.

It will work, and it will be alright, but your focus will look soft and dream-like rather than sharp due to the shitty optics you'll likely find in the adapter. Also, your 50mm will turn instead of to an 80mm, to about a 97mm or something, since the adapter adds even more crop factor. Same goes for all Minolta glass. I also have an adapter for my FD glass, but I only use it if I'm doing like, a dream sequence for a video I'm doing, and want completely natural distortion.


I personally only use pentax (or any other k-mount) and nikon lenses for vintage primes, but you can also use older M42 pentax screwmount lenses, and Olympus Zuiko OM-mount lenses (which are fucking awesome)

Refer to the vintage glass thread for any other questions regarding that stuff, though.

Just want to say the t2is(and all rebels) burst isn't that bad. A used 20/30/40d or a 60d/7d would obviously be better but you can still shoot good sequences with it. 3.7 vs 5 isnt that much of a difference (for me at least). I have a 20d as well as the t2i but I don't use it very often besides timelapses.

3.7 is fucking terrible for sports. 5 is the fence, and anything faster is useable. Anything below about 5 is a pretty bad burstmode, and not even worth it.
