Why do people find skiing without poles attractive?

I skied without poles once this year. To be honest I really didn't like it. So why do a lot of skiers prefer to do it?

I use poles when I am lapping and going hard. I dont use poles when I am trying something, or on those not giving a fuck days.

it just gives you a little extra freedom because without poles you can do whatever the fuck you want basically. and since ive gotten used to the whole no poles fad i think that its easier to do everything

had to ski with my arm in a sling so i ditched the other pole too for a season. It honestly made me such a better skier once I got my poles back.

fucked my ucl ligament in my thumb and broke the bone it joins to.

i ride no poles for park now, will probably only use poles for pow from now on

Every time i have broken any wrist/thumb/hand i have been wearing poles, and i have never broken any wrist/thumb/hand when not wearing poles.

Honestly, for me it's a whole different feeling. I actually feel as though I can be more stylish and tricks come more easily in the park. I ride Big Mtn too and use poles for that but on groomers and park, no poles is just a lot of fun.

Absolutely one of the worst trends to ever hit skiing and it looks absurd. all you goons out there who ride with out poles are idiots. theres about 10 people who can pull it off but i still hate. one of my biggest pet peeves.

My poles were stolen so I went the rest of the year without them and realized buying new ones would just be a waste.

i have more fun without poles. if i ski pow i use poles but when i'm doing groomers and park i like having my hands free. but fuck having fun skiing.

If I'm going to be in the park all day, every single run why would I have any use for poles whatsoever? If I'm gonna go to the mountain to ski glades, east-coast pow, or just feel like shredding the rest of the mountain then sure I'll bring my poles. I skied without poles in the park probably 70% of the time I went skiing this year and next season I'll probably use them even less. I like the freedom and non-restricted use of my hands when I'm in the park. I don't think it looks any cooler, I don't think it makes me any better, idc who does and doesn't use poles. I JUST FUCKING LIKE IT!

There's reasons that people prefer one to the other, it's not like it's some arbitrary thing... he was asking what those reasons are. It's a valid question. So many of you sound so butthurt, so quick to jump to a hyper defensive "WHAT THE FUCK DOES IT MATTER" standpoint as if he was attempting to vilify pole-less skiing.

once you get used to it actually doesn't feel so bad, actually makes me feel much freeer, also sometimes on lifts it's more chill but that's not why...

I like jibbing without poles to learn new stuff, then ski the park again with poles and I feel much more sure on what I do and more balanced...

I usually ski with poles, but those once-in-a-while-no-poles-weekend-switches help me get more confidence, I dunno

the attractive thing... I think in 99.9% of the cases it just looks stupid, skiing groomers or pow IS stupid without for that matter, and there are just too many gangst kids tryna copy bdawg and bloody dollazz...

I find skiing without poles likens my riding to skating, or surfing. 

Plus:
-Grabs
-Beers
-Women
-High-fives
-Cheechin'
-Snacking
-Less shit to carry any & everywhere.
-Less equipment to break & replace.

In my case this is strictly for park skiing, night-skiing, spring slush, and overall derping around the mountain.  Anything over 10" fresh, and I'll grab a pair.  How else to make awesome poleplants, four-point landings & stem-christies?

I come from a racing background, so the no poles thing never really made sense to me. Until I tried it, can't lie, I kinda fancy it, even in pow you seem more loose and less tied down

i find it super fun, i don't ski a lot of park either, it's challenging as well because its harder to balance and therefore stay smooth, that said i usually ski with poles to push myself around and hit people with..

best way to surf pow, you can dip turns and lay down on the snow with out having a pole get in the way. difft tokes for diffft smokes eh? no poles no problems. thats what my mom taught me

I started using no poles this season and I though that I got a lot better. When I use no poles my arms flail like a mother fucker but I was learning new tricks.

Skiing without poles is fine.....If you can pull it off.

Problem is 99% of the people doing it naturally ski like shit, and their lack of ability to even buy a simple turn is compounded by their lack of poles. Therefore any style they think they gained is nullified by their truly terrible skiing.

Someone made the statement recently that kids are not developing their own style as they learn the tricks, they are emulating a style, then trying to learn the trick.

No where is this more evident than in the no poles craze.

And saying it makes skiing simplified and easier is the most bitchmade excuse for justifying it because that is the exact premise for CHILDREN when they're learning to ski.

Different people like different things and are used to different things.
Sure, there are people that think it's SO G to ride without them, but many have better reasons. I for example had an injury, skied poleless and then got used to it. Also, it was slightly more comfortable to carry around only skis and it was kind of hard to get grabs with poles after learning many of them without, plus i mainly ski a really small hill so there's not much necessity for poles. After a while tho, i started skiing with them again since it was so much easier in the lift line and got used to that, again. I'd never ski poleless in pow or when only hitting the groomers tho, but i rarely get to do that.

I personally, in terms of style prefer with poles, I couldn't even tell you why, that's just how it is. But skiing with or without is just a question of habit, obviously if you tried 1 day no poles, I wonder how you can feel comfortable.

Eh, not really. It's NS beating a dead horse again. Who gives a fuck if someone skis without poles? Is it effecting your skiing in anyway? Probably not. There's a reason it's called freeskiing too. Live and let live, people.
