How do I tell my friend he's overweight?

So a friend and coworker of mine is overweight. I'm talking 150lbs+ overweight. We have casting for the Biggest Looser coming into town this weekend, and I really think he should try out. Huge personality and a good story to go with him.
Question is, how do you tell someone that they're fat and should try out for something like this without hurting their feelings?

In what way is that bad? Even losing 10 pounds only to regain it it could be a major success for someone struggling with obesity. It shows them that it is possible to lose 10 pounds and if that's possible, so is 20, and 30, etc.
For the majority of people who quit smoking cigs, it takes them many tries to finally quit for good. How is this different than your scenario?
Also, I'm sure the majority of people on that show don't regain all of their weight. Obviously there are some, but claiming that they all do is absurd. You don't know the show so stop making blind accusations. I don't know it either but I'm sure they leave the contestants with plenty of knowledge and motivation to keep up their healthy habits after the contest is over.

tell him when he gets diabetes type 2, you will definitely make fun of his fatness, but if he gets skinny you'll never call him fat at all.
