Help a bitch out. My monitor is real dark

it is. Now, i'm not a moron when it comes to computers, but i'm outta things to try
A little background:
A few weeks ago my monitor was getting darker and there were some dark lines running horizontally across the screen. I did all adjustments (contrast, brightness...) and it barely improved. Then, I replaced it with one i know works and same thing. So, I replaced the video card with a brand new one and got latest drivers, no improvement. I've also tried refresh rate, resolution, colors. Still no improvement.
I'm outta things to try. If it helps, its a p3 architecture running windows 98se (no laughing!)
Anyone?

Time for new monitor, ours was doing the same, has nothing to do with what your computer is running on really. You'll know when to replaice it when it blows up.

Er... do you have another video card you could switch to, and see if that works, or switch to your system integrated input slot? My desktop has a couple of places to plug in the monitor, one direct, and one through my video card... Not sure about yours, but it might be the hardware within the desktop that isn't properly plugged in or just outright broken.

jd, i put in a new video card, and that didn't do it. But, yo may be onto something with the wiring not making a good connection somewhere. I'll persue that avenue.

you could have the shop look at it..... but then they would charge you a bunch of money, not fix the problem and clear your entire memory, and call it a job done well. as you can see, i dont liek comp repair shops

I went into the system settings and changed palette snooping from disabled to enabled, and also changed default primary adapter to PCI instead of AGP (doesn't seem necesarry), and then reset monitor to defaults and did a degauss.
Some combination of the above seemed to help. Its not perfect, but it is better

is the monitor cable wired directly to the monitor or one you can remove. if its not directly connected you can try replacing the cable. they sometimes get damaged and would cause the kind of problems you talk about

uhhh well lets see this isnt hard. its called problem solving guys, and you think im the dumb one.
so you say you switched it from AGP to PCI well then the solution is simple. you have tried everything and there mom to fix the brightness but nothing. so you switched video cards and nothing, and you also switched monitors. nothing right.
hmm this is realy hard guys... SWITCH YOUR MOTHERBOARD... your AGP is shot and is not reading the video card. so no matter what you keep doing nothing will work.
somehow you fried your AGP on the motherboard and its not reading the video card correctly. so you need to replace your motherboard most likely. i had a similar problem but with my processor. i switched out everything and then finally said fuck it and got a new mobo. that should fix the problem quick and simple.

actually d-loc we are trying to help him trouble shoot by going through the less drastic things then changing the board. I have seen several times where a damaged cable caused the EXACT same problems he's been having. Also in your senario of a damaged AGP slot, the simple solution would be to either use a different AGP slot if there are 2 or to buy a PCI video card which would be a hell of alot cheaper then replacing the whole board. Usually there are better solutions then 'throw the f*cker out the window and buy a G5' like most people suggest

^it CANT be the cord, he has tried 2 differnt monitor and he has tried 2 different video cards.. WTF is the only other option... hmmm the motherboard?
and no a new motherboard is not going ot be expensive for him. he has an older computer with 98SE on it, do you really think he has a new processor? cuz im thinking not, so a new mobo would probably be around $35-40.. tops.

easy tiger. it can be the cable. up till a few years ago (and still some do) many monitors used cables that were not hardwired into the back of the monitor and had the same db15 connector on both ends of the cable. if he tried with 2 older monitors and simply removed the cable off the back of the monitor and plugged it into the new one then he'd have the same issues on both. also he said he bought a video card but never said he got a PCI card instead of an AGP. no damage to the AGP slot would affect the operation of a PCI video card so next step would be to take the AGP he bought and exchange it for PCI. again motherboard is a last resort. And if he's running an older setup with a P3 he may not be able to just buy a board off the shelf at future shop so it will be harder to track down a compatible one.

AGP slots are very sensitive, you don't really need to 'fry' it per se, it's enough if there is a little tiny short in it and it's done...tigerDirect has good deals on motherboards;)

macmahoon, i didn't try (or even look) to see if the monitor-to-tower cable is hard-wired. I think it is.
But, the original card was an AGP, the new one is PCI. Through all of the troubleshooting i've done, i've come to beleive the problem is not:
the monitor itself, the power cable, the video card or the settings.
Nothing was changed with the computer prior to the problem. I'm at work right now, but I'm going to give it another go later tonight.
One of the most interesting things, is that I can seem to make temporary small improvements. Like, when I make changes, I see it get alittle better, then, it eventually reverts back to shitty.
And, D-loc, I appreciate the help, but i am not really listening to it. I've seen you post some god awful reccomendations elsewhere

most likey the monitor is hardwired but I just put that as a possibility. If you have done both AGP and PCI then its not likely you are having minor (burnt slot) Mboard issues since it shouldnt affect both slots the same. It could be a major board problem but thats a last resort. Another could be that your power supply is starting to kick the bucket. Especially if you have newer cards they do put quite a draw on the PS. Again these are all just possibities and hard to diagnose when I cant actually see the system but good luck.

NUT fine then dont take my word... i may act like a fool on the board for entertainment but my major is computers. im a 3rd year student on his 5th built computer. i build all my shit and have a very good friend that build and services computers for a living. its our jobs to fix computers and troubleshoot.
so i guess you can keep trying and buying new video cards and monitors but its not going to fix the problem you ignorant fuck. nothing personal but are you really that dumb in thinking its something other than the mother board? i mean you have fucking tried everything else now the best troubleshooting method would be to get a new motherboard, the heart and soul of your computer.
as stated above the AGP slot is very sensitive and can break easily. just inserting your card in sideways would short something out per-say. but from everything you have stated its not physically possible that its your video card or monitor. you have swapped both and the problem has stayed the same.
now onto your other findings about how when you change some setting the monitor brightness will get better for a minute but the revert right back to the old. this is because your motheroard has a short or may be fried and not drawing the correct power to supply the video card. all video cards draw power straight from the AGP on the mother board. my video card has also an external power conenct because the onboard power is not enough to drive my super 5900SE geforce 4 card. so it needs a power cord hooked up to accelerate the power its draws.
so what im guessing, and yes its a guess since i dont have the PC sitting right in front of me to troubleshoot. it has to be a motherboard issue, since your computer is older and motherboards are VERY SENSITIVE.
i mean seriously dude if its working 1 minute and then not working the next, what do you really think is the problem? its called basic troubleshooting and obviously noone on the forums can see that you changed out the 2 main components that could be causing the problem and that did nothing.
now its time to get ur fucking head out of ur ass and try to swap motherboards. or just upgrade your PC with a new processor and new motherboard. that would be the best thing i could think of to solve this issue.
maybe i may look like an idiot on the forums but still im here to make people laugh and start commotion. my LIfE revolves around computers and the world of computers. i will never buy a pre-built computer ever again. its not worth it so do it urself.

^ i'm not saying you're wrong. I am just saying i've seen you give horrible advice elsewhere.
Example from site discussion:
Skizzle - 'im at school right now and havent been able to get on to newschoolers from my computer at home the status bar syas it is loading but really slopwly and then a page comes up saying some gay shit about how it cannot display or something, any insight????'
D-loc - 'ummm ur video drivers might be out of date, how olds the computer?
i dunno really whats wrong, but maybe something with video'
If you don't admit that you're above advice is horrible, then I know that you know nothing.
And, if you want to get into a pissing match about computer knowledge and experience, you will lose to me. Software tester - ha!

^^You're fighting a losing argument. Right about now, D-Loc's extreme ego kicks in, and, though everything he says is either complete bullshit or completely off topic and wrong, nothing you can say will make him admit he's wrong, because, you know, he majors in computers.
Which, as anyone remotely in touch with with industry knows, means completely nothing.
Give it up d-loc.

nut... hahah 'if you wanna get in a battle about computer knowledge, you will lose'
so what ur a software tester, big deal that means alot of things and doesnt really tell me anything. i test software on my SPARE time on a daily bases. i also control 7000+ computers in my company deploying and packaging software. i also fix and do support for all hardware. so i just dont deal with software like urself i broadened my knowledge and work on both sides of computers. software and hardware. i test for my software company that makes spyware removers.
so when you end up picking up a new mobo, then come holler at me. cuz what else are you gonna do? what are you gonna do about it?
and my video comment you quoted was just a guess. how am i suppose to trouble shoot when all he says is uhhh my video is fucked up. yeah that gives me alot to go on. maybe if i had sat down in front of this machine and actually see the problem i could have been more assistance. you being a software test should know that computers have glitches and are best worked on when in touch, not over a description of what the problem is.
so have you fixed ur problem yet or are you trying to fuck around with the monitor some more?
i salute you for dissing my comments and wasting your time trying to fix a monitor. that right there in itself should get the GW award.
so when you fix it please be sure to post how you fixed it and deem me computer king.
oh and 1 more thing, you test software you dont actually program the shit like i do, and have successfully almost made our first million. anyone could test a piece of software it come to real smarts actually programming the code.

Hey, buddy, SHUT THE FUCK UP. You're the type of person that I can't STAND to help out with computer problems, so please, don't ever post anything asking for help and respect a good response from me. You're the type of guy that knows a bit about computers and you automatically assume that your small bit of knowledge makes you the smartest fucker on the block. Well, guess what buddy, you're not, theres a hell of a lot more people out there that are far more intelligent and have far more knowledge than you. Building 5 computers might give you a bit of experience to play with, but by no means are you the be all end all. Do not call other people ignorant just because they don't agree with your statement.
To the original poster: It very well could be your motherboard dying, however, give me a bit more information, does this only happen when in Windows, or does it happen while the computer is booting? What wattage is the power supply? Do you have any Adobe products installed on your system (Adobe has a gamma control feature that sometimes fucks shit up), are there any pins broken out of the cord for the monitor? Do you have the correct drivers installed for the video card? Check the power cord going to the monitor, is it secured properly, is it frayed anywhere, are you using the same cord for both monitors? Try both the monitors on computers you know work. Also, check that the BIOS setup is set correctly for your video card. You have to rule out all those other things before you declare that the motherboard is bad, and if the mobo is bad, then you're just better off buying a motherboard/processor combo from pricewatch, becuase a decent P3 board will e hard to come by seeing as its outdated.
Let me know the brands of the parts and I'll do a bit of a seach to see what I can find on the subject.

Clearly it's an imperfect document if it doesn't define marriage as a union between man and woman anyways. While we're fixing that little oversight, why not patch up a few other things at the same time?
