Here is a short write up on my opinion of the modern edit. For some reason when I was saving the draft, it decided to completely swap this article with my LSM interview :(. Hopefully, we can get it fixed and everything will be back to normal. Until then, enjoy my new article!

ok but couldn't you apply this to the span of however many months between muddy winter and the most influential edit before that? i get what you're saying but this is an argument you can make for pretty much any influential edit. "where was the creativity before b&e 4?" "skiing was so stale until tom's superunknown".
the thing about game-changing edits is that there's always going to be a period of staleness leading up to said game-changer

I disagree, maybe you need to watch more videos but there is plenty of good original content uploaded every winter.

You can only absorb so much of a good thing before you gain tolerance... edits are reaching that point (at least with me). I disagree that the edits are "sub-par..." the front page banger edits we see every week are well skiied, well produced, etc. but, as you pointed out, hold no weight.

There are thousands of edits put up per winter yes a lot of them aren't fantastic, mine included, but there are plenty of sick edits too. Not sure how you figure edits don't impress anymore.

that's silliness. the ski community is jaded as fuck. keep your mind and eyes open and there will always be something to be impressed about. i literally just watched the scotty donahue/nick miles mammoth edit. it wasnt earth shattering, but i was impressed, and that follow cam run will be coursing through my brain all day at work. thats just one example, that happened to me no more than 5 minutes ago

allow me to elaborate. Firstly, the fact that you think your opinion matters enough to weigh in, especially when you make ridiculous blanket statements like your "article", is totally stupid.

second, whilst complaining about too many edits resembling B&E and Stept, you yourself have notably made more than 3 threads of "appreciation" (glorified dick riding) regarding skiers from those very same crews

third, you contribute absolutely nothing to the skiing community, video or otherwise, and as a result have zero credibility on the matter. You want to complain about skiing being stale? Add something of your own, otherwise, shut the fuck up.

Its obvious that a lot of Kids (including myself) are putting out edits that are mostly some rail shots and few jumps with as much style as we can muster up, but i think now a days what makes an edit enjoyable is the cool camera angles or getting the shot with the sun just peaking into the back. I would disagree that there aren't edits that influence skiing every year, McSlay putting out that edit at sugarbush in early december got us all cumming over his crazy smooth style.

personal creativity and style only goes so far. most styles are clones, and reproductions. the best edits are top rated ,but its the same few skiers everytime. open your eyes and appreciate whats not top rated.

This is a large reason I actually really like browsing NSTV for videos. The whole concept is to give it more of a feeling of channels, so you can dig out some personality. Top rated in NSTV has an aggregate rating, so there has to be consistency to it.

You can get the top rated experience from VOD/VOW/VOM if you want.

Didn't read because I dont believe in that sorta thing but I kinda agree with you based only on the title of the post.

Even if its someone I know, or a really good kids I rather watch some edit from a place I never heard of with no dubs or 450s onto rails then another PC, Keystone or Breck edit. Their "ability to impress" has dwindled because of the shear volume of edits and repeating of style/tricks.

One of out every 50 edit has a new/cool trick or a unique style like Kerin Mcslay for example. I might throw up if I see another fake tail sit down press that makes you look like your taking a shit.

I just think that edits with more lifestyle shots or shots of people actually talking are a lot more enjoyable because otherwise, a lot of edits fall into the same cookie cutter mold. That's why it's always so much more enjoyable to watch TC and Totally Trevor than an edit that might have dubs and cork 630s out.

not to mention the article has a point, but it speaks in absolutes and there are certainly exceptions. andy's point is what i thought the article would be about - essentially that skiing is so saturated.

A good point, and I agree with you on a fundamental basis... but disagree with respect to pretty much every other aspect. First of all, no 2-5 minute edit has "the power to completely redirect the entire ski industry." While park skiing is blowing up at an exponential rate each year, you're disregarding racing, moguls, and even off-piste freestyle skiing. I don't care who you are or what bag of tricks you have, your edit is not going to redefine an entire sport. Movies like Session 1242, Long Story Short, and IDEA revolutionized skiing and brought a new wave of style to the mountain.

Addressing your point that we no longer have edits on the same level as Muddy Winter, you're simply wrong. Sure B&E are pioneers of a new generation in park skiing, but you're forgetting some of the best shorts out there. I'm not going to elaborate on them, but if you're not impressed, you should reconsider your understanding of this sport.

To be honest I just think its the access that everybody has these days that is causing this trend. Everybody and their dad has a go-pro, Canon with HD video, etc.

A little while ago, to do a quality video edit you had to put down some REAL cash to buy a great filming rig, and editing gear. Now anybody can do it. The effort is just not there. A few guys are gonna go " hey im just gonna switch on my go pro and film me doing the same ol shit at the same resort i do everyday."

Kids just want attention, and its never been easier then it is now.

I also think that context is heavily missing in ski films. I have no idea who it was, but there was a ski movie posted on here that was a full story about pro mogul skiers in a season. I forget what it was called, but it was just so incredible because it had a story to it. I used to love some of the Warren Miller films exactly for that reason, because getting to the snow is just as interesting sometimes as what happens on it.

I would love to just see edits about following a crew for a whole season. Everything from booking sleds, to setting up shit, to hardships of injury.

I've watched maybe 15-20 edits total this entire season so nothing has reached saturation for me. It all looks fresh to me and they are much better than I ever will be so it's all really impressive. Not really sure what you are trying to say OP.

I couldn't agree with you more. There is such an immense flow of edits coming into the scene, its easy to reach saturation.

To be honest, that is the reason why we've gone so far in the direction of up/down voting, digesting content from everywhere, and then giving narrow venues to publish only the top stuff (NSTV).

The entire philosophy behind that is to work as a community to digest absolutely every edit out there known to man, and then work as a team to curate it down to only a few good ones.

That way, if you only check out what is hot or top rated (or you use one of the VOD/VOW/VOM NSTV channels) you get a subset of high quality edits to satiate your needs.

Of course, if someone wants to watch 30 edits per day every day for years on end... you end up going deeper into the library and there's no way that you'll always have quality. You just start to find the end.

What is cool is that we don't have to watch the same ski movie on repeat anymore. Shit man, back in my day you just jammed 13 in the VCR the moment you got home from skiing, watched it through, rewind that bitch and start it the fuck again.

Wow, that comment dated me... but you get the idea. Same shit over and over. Now its first world problems

This, pretty much. OP, I agreed with your title, but your delivery was terrible. Not gonna dive into this too deeply seeing as I'm on mobile and at work, but as a whole, much (not all) of the ski community lacks creativity and originality and I think you do too.
