But seriously though, that top rated news page. Its cool, no?

Yeah that is pretty neat actually, although it's not exactly got a huge amount of "top news", heck the 7th(ish) top rated news on that page is -1.

It's probably because the North American season has mostly ended, so there's not a lot of really compelling news being created every single day. Might make sense to have the page default to top rated of the week instead of day for this reason.

Anyway, I dig it.

Yeah well this was a similar problem with the old news system, except instead of it being rated low it was just there pretending to be good news.

We can add something that excludes stuff below a certain rating. Some of the sections work like that.

The main thing is that what we need is everyone doing their best to add both their own articles, but also articles from the entire internet about skiing, then voting on them.... then blammo that Top Rated news view becomes the coolest thing in the universe.

I'm just sayin....

There's a lot of spam/junk news that needs to be reported

I really don't agree with the news section being used for advertisements. like this one:

if it's an article about a new ski technology or new industry changing material for boots, then sure. that's great.

but honestly no one gives a flip about another new clothing company. buy some advertisement space on Newschoolers rather than clogging up the news section.

The latest news is a shit-show, the same article reposted, basketball, and football, really?

Well there's a certain freedom that I basically want to protect within the free market content economy. That freedom is to write about whatever you want, and for users to be able to vote up and down whatever they want.

Look at absolutely any ski news website, and you'll see press releases barely disguised as news everywhere. The email blasts you get are largely paid for, and the messages are all just ads.

In our world, I don't want to remove the ability for companies to write their messages, but I want to remove the illusion that journalists are writing it as well as their ability to simply pay to put it to the top of the news. Ads are ads, news is news.

You the reader are capable of an upvote, a downvote or no action at all. Without speaking with your money, you can speak with your votes. A press release is news, but you say whether anyone sees it or not. Sometimes these things are very interesting, and if a company does a really good job at presenting their product in a fair and balanced manner, then more power to them - straight to the top.

If not, then down to oblivion.
