if you want to own guns for whatever reason it may be, more power to you. but if you have a problem with background checks or something else that is solely for the safety of others, then logically one can only assume there's something you're trying to hide that would make you deemed unsafe

I am by no means anti-gun, but the meaning of the second amendment is very much up for interpretation. The exact wording is: AMENDMENT II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

This could be interpreted to mean something along the lines of the national guard as well. I say again, i am a gun owner myself, but pleas understand the second amendment before you go on a rant about it.

the failure to effectively enforce a law and the law's overall legitimacy are two completely seperate things.

i dont want to resort to such bad analogies, but the pro-gun sides always refers to cars and knifes and batmobiles and other shit, so: the failure to prevent child abuse has NOTHING to do with the legitimacy of the law paragraphs that forbid child abuse.



and i completely agree with all other points. less legal guns mean less illegal guns. its such a simple equation its not even funny. obviously there will be exceptions, but in general, especially when looking at all other industry nations, there is no alternative to tougher gun laws.

Oh how nice of you to quote what the republicans said about the patriot act when it was enacted.

You can all say whatever the fuck you want but both sides want to take away peoples rights.

I'm pro gun, pro choice, pro drug legalization (look at Portugal if you want to have this argument), pro gay marriage pro just about anything that gives it's citizens more fucking freedom.

My biggest gripe with this (gun) argument is the harsh contrast between abortions and gun rights.  Shit, I was listening to some left wing talk show host and he stated how it's hypocritical to be against abortion and pro gun.  (of course this hypocritical fuck was anti gun but pro "choice"). 

I agree with this statement that's why I'm pro both.

MORE FREEDOM, LESS OF WASHINGTON TELLING ME WHAT THE FUCK TO DO.


Little known facts that anti gun fucks dislike acknowledging;
-Chicago has the highest gun related homicide rates in the country yet the strictest gun laws
-80+% of all gun homicide deaths happen by hand gun
-The columbine shooting was executed after the assault weapon ban with the restricted magazine limits
-Texas and other states with Liberal gun laws (liberal in the fucking real sense of the word) have some of the lowest gun related homicide rates per capita in the US.

If you want to stop gun violence why not look at the root, violence.  If I was the NRA I would set up a fund to help people with mental health.  That would send the right message of saying Hey, there is a mental health problem and we have the money to do something about it.  But alas, people blame guns because it's an easy target.

You can also hunt with a handgun and it's quite practical in some situations. My uncle actually took a doe with a black powder pistol this year.

Damn... Guys like OP is exactly the kind of person who makes me realize how far out pro-gun people are...
I'm from Europe and I have been following this whole gun discussion for a while. And honestly I don't see why you shouldn't make gun restrictions.
Sure people who want to go hunting should have the right to it! And that is why it is only a restriction. Just like we have in almost all countries in Europe, and here it is working out just fine.
But making guns so easy to obtain just makes it way to easy to kill! And the argument "guns don't kill people people kill people" is just one big manipulation..
If some kid got the urge to go to his school and shoot everybody BUT couldn't just grab one from home, what do you think he would do? Chech his neighborhood for hunters and ask to borrow the gun... I think not...
In fact I think that if there had not been guns in the homes of those kids, I believe that they would never have gotten into the thought of killing someone with one.
Having a gun just makes it way to accessible and easy to just choose the "easy way out" and kill with it..
And of course it will be a law that has to emerged over time, and it will not just from one day to another erase all guns from people. But over the time it will get most of the wrong guns out of peoples hands.

I'm not off my rocker but if I were even an all out gun ban wouldn't hinder me from hurting people.  The real problem with these mentally insane people is that they tend to function like normal human beings and go about daily life until they just snap.  Which makes me wonder if background checks would even hinder 1 of these extremly televised tragedies.

What defines an efficient killing machine? 

Lower number of bullets in a magazine?  Didn't work, see columbine.

No "assualt style" weapons?  THe vast majority of homicides produced by guns are from hand guns not the call of duty tricked out rifles.

I mean if we're talking about efficiency shouldn't we look at Oklahoma city bombing?  I mean aren't bombs extremely efficient killing machines?

I know you hate that argument but we're not getting rid of handguns anytime soon that's just a fact.

I do have a question though.  Why is the Boston massacre considered a terrorist act yet the newtown school shooting isn't?  It's considered a shooting?  Why?  It's the intent to murder lots of people.  Wasn't that the same intent of the bombers?

Please tell me what is a "Relevant" reason is to buy a firearm??? Hunting? Target shooting?? Self protection?? It makes me feel warm and fuzzy sleeping with it under my pillow???? All are a matter of personal opinion.

Law abiding?? So if I got in a bar fight and was arrested I shouldn't be able to purchase a firearm ever again??

No longer relevant today??? yea it seems to me the populace of the united states wholeheartily trusts their government and would never want to take up arms against them ever *sarcasm*

I for one think the laws that are in place as far as gun control are pretty sufficient. Hell my stepfather got a cc permit about a decade ago and he had to go through expunging a public drunken charge from like 20 years prior. I agree education about proper firearm usage could go a long way to stopping violent shooting sprees.

My greatest fear is that stricter legislation will bring on more and more fees for the government to make money off of the public. I'm sure background checks aren't free and if I want to sell a gun to my cousin who I know and trust I don't wanna have to go through that.

A handgun is purely for self defense and the only way to carry a concealed handgun is to go through a class and get your proper shit. I dont understand why someone would want to take away someone's right to carry a concealed weapon. It could save your life someday and 99.999999 percent of the time it won't ever effect your daily life. The reason I'm not saying 100% is some moron would raise the "oh, but not 100% of the time blah blah."

The people who say that are probably pro gun but they dont own any. It is kinda crazy how easy it is to get a gun in Oregon.

I have a bunch of guns and im all for waiting periods and more intense background checks. Everyone is different but a waiting period is a good idea

personally, i think we should leave access similar to what it is now, but make the punishments for gun related offenses WAAAAAAYYYYY more severe.

Good question, I don't know if anyone on here or yourself would know that. But you could make the black and white statement of all the guns they have were legally purchased. Which is probably untrue but I know that's what you were getting at and thought I had to make you think a little more before you try to prove your point.

according to a local chief of police, most of the guns they encounter on the street are stolen and resold illegally. that's the first place we need to start cracking down. making possession, sale, etc. of illegally obtained firearms punishable by much more severe sentences.

That's a stupid post it already is extremely severe, 5 to 15 years mandatory if you have an unregistered firearm. And no we should be cracking down on people who get their guns stolen because clearly you're not responsible enough to have it.

You could steal my safe pretty easily And get my guns. I also have 1 under my bed and 1 in my sock dresser. A locked up gun does me no good if someone breaks into my house. I should not be punished if they are stolen, thats really dumb.

I should not be punished because someone broke into my house while i was gone. Pretty much my only reason for having guns is home defense so I have to have at least one not locked up.

Maybe instead of punishing the victim we should punish the criminal. Its a crazy idea but i think it makes more sense

That's assuming criminals are buying their guns legally. I don't see how an assault weapons ban would stop a criminal from breaking into someones home and stealing their guns.





Sidenote: Anyone catch the AR-15 special that has been on the last few nights??? Americas gun or something like that. They had a dude on last night who is manufacturing ar components on a 3d printer and distributing the files and plans so any joe shmoe can do the same at home. He said he was specifically doing it that way so there are no numbers and the government cannot track them in any way. That's interesting to say the least, not sure how I feel about that yet.

haha no it wasn't wounded. Not all that impressive, just different. I suppose a flintlock pistol is a little harder to aim but it's still deadly. Just doesn't have the range of a normal deer rifle or more modern handgun. He just had to wait for an opportunity where the deer was closer sort of like archery where your limited to 40 yards or so.

First year he ever tried to hunt with it and he got one. We do have tons of doe in northern PA though.

no it's pistol grip(have a regular stock though), holds like 7 shells or so, and it's got a pretty short barrel but it's factory so I don't know what that counts for.

unfortunately for you, pistol grip = assault weapon = illegal.

The word "assault weapon" is genius. Makes people think "oh must mean weapon used to assault people." When in reality it just means that your gun can't have things like bayonet mounts, pistol grips, or collapsible stocks. It does not apply to say a .50 caliber sniper rifle that can kill someone from two miles away.

Alright I didn't make myself clear In ny last post. I'm not saying you should throw people in jail because they got the guns stolen. What I'm trying to say is that obviously these illegal guns are being stolen from legal owners if we put our heads together for 10 minutes I'm sure we could think of a way to help stop this from happening.

My perspective for what its worth.

We have become a nation that hates anything that impedes or appears to impede on the individual liberties of others. Here's an example: There are plenty of people who think that abortion is wrong, but would never vote for anything that would make it illegal. The overwhelming majority of people in this country are hypersensitive to imposing their will on the rights of others. Maybe that comes from the heightened awareness of bullying, but basically any new legislation that gives the appearance that it is going to be taking rights away is going to be unpopular.

The dems have control of both houses in Colorado and they are ramming through a gun control bill. I predict that this is going to cost them dearly in the next election.

It's really not that much of a matter of opinion. There is no basis for people to think that Obama is going to attack his own country the first chance he gets. It's purely paranoia.

That's not paranoia, that's being cautious. I agree airports take things a bit far with security, but I don't think it's a big deal telling people they can't bring knives on a flight. Not bringing a knife on a plane is roughly the equivalent of not allowing the public access to fully automatic guns. It's just stupid to do it.
