I'm looking for as many perspectives on this as possible. I'm studying tourism concentrating on adventure studies and festival and events. Being a life-long park rat, ski addict, whatever you wanna call it; having competed in alot of events myself, having suffered alot injuries, now im looking to get away from so much competing myself but hoping to make a future spreading awesome expereinces through events.
Recently there have been some seriously awesome, spectacular skiing events/competitions and I just want to know what makes them special and so awesome-from both a competitor's view and spectator's view.
There's always been those events that i get excited about every year even when there's no way i would be able to attend. X-games and Dew Tour are obviously events where i want to know the results or even watch the runs of all the pros. But if anybody remembers the Jon Olsson Super Sessions, that event was so epic. Nine Knights, going on right now, looking at the castle feature they've got built, so sick! Features like that and like the awesome quarter pipe gap to hip at the Tanner Hall invitational.
But its not all about the feature or terrain. The atmosphere or vibe of the event is what makes it awesome and memorable. I watched part of the Tanner Hall Invitational on the live stream on Tanner's website and the vibe there was pretty chill. Alot of skiing's veterans, rockstars, up and comers, Tanner's buddies, and even a poacher (I think, btw that poacher was killing it while i was watching), all just having a sick chill time progressing the sport on a pretty unique feature. The Orage Masters this year was probably the greatest event in skiing this year in my opinion. I was so stoked to hear that they were bringing it back (to sun valley at least) this year, and the masters did not disappoint. From what I've watched and red, that event seemed like absolute insanity, but that's what made it so awesome! That's also why it's such a celebrated part of skiing. Teams in themed costumes all just going buck wild on the course-It really just doesnt get any better. What's amazing about the Orage Masters is that not alot of events can bring about that such madness and craziness and its the LEGACY of the event that makes the chaos, stokeness, and overall awesomeness all possible. I love the Orage Masters and hope to see it continued as an annual tradition but i have no idea how they can get away with doing all that crazy shit. From heavy drinking, to debris all over the course, its really awesome that no one got hurt (I wasn't there not sure, dont think anyone was badly hurt or burned) or they didnt offend anyone or any stupid lawsuit or liability bullshit.
But Newschoolers,!
I realize I've kindof been rambling for awhile but I need to know, from large to small scale events/comps, what makes events awesome, or at least unique, stand-out, more enjoyable, memorable, epic, hyped up, anything! I think you get the point, but how can events improve?and finally, whats the best way to make these improvements possible to better progress and showcase our unique sport?
