Yea Mandarin is pretty valuable, but it might not be an option.

Assuming Spanish and French are your only options take French, Spanish kind of sucks

Depends where you live. I live on the WC, so Spamnish was more useful to me. Dem Messicans. Also, I want to go to Spain.

French for up north or the EC, because of all the Canadians and others.

French you can pretty much use in only Canada and France, Spanish can be used in the SW, Mexico, South America and Spain

As a skier I would suggest French. Switzerland, France, and Quebec all have dope skiing and French is used mostly if not completely in these areas. Spanish if you want to go south/ plan on skiing in chile

Spanish would be used more internationally, but I personally have been wanting to learn German. There are a number of languages that you could learn relatively easily after learning German.

anyone else in this thread have a "which language would you like to learn" ad on the side bar?

maybe because it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world? quebec (but who the fuck cares), caribbean, almost all of africa, france, belgium, switzerland, etc. much more useful than spanish.

SPANISH or Latin,

Spanish is very good if you want to be able to overcome language barriers with your pot dealers

Latin has helped me out greatly in all aspects of education, from high level literature, vocabulary, and certainly in sciences and law.

i dont think im ever around French besides when we ski Tremblant Jay or Whiteface

spanish is spoken in the entire Central America and South America continent, and as an American the influx of people from those countries makes it FAR more useful than French.
I've travelled almost the entire Carribean, and the closest to French that is really spoken is Creole. French is spoken, but everyone knows English.

The hispanics moving to America haven't had the funding or tourism to be able to learn good English, so its much better to know their language rather than to have them try and communicate in broken English. Africa, people speak French, but everyone fucking hates the French. Plus you wouldn't be able to understand any of it. Better off speaking English down there because the British colonized just as much as the French did. And if a European doesn't communicate with you in English in France/Belgium/Switzerland, they're most likely being a douchebag to you because you are an American and they don't want to speak to you.


TL;DR French is useless unless you want to understand the French culture. Go with Spanish. It actually as a second language will make your life realistically easier

Lol. Dude you live in CO, maybe that's why... Go to the Northeast, there are things printed in french.... Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, etc... All have things printed in french as well.

There are many Canadian citizens who ski the Northeast, so yes, it would be helpful to know french, depending on where you ski/live....


How many of us are going to spend time around a Spanish person?

Are you kidding? spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. About 400 million people speek it. Mexico, Spain and USA. so guess you can say its pretty much global.

Why is this a difficult decision? If your only options are French and Spanish, then Spanish. French is fucking lame and it constantly sounds like you're trying to suck your own dick, whereas ESPANOL is easy to learn and is always fun to speak.

Spanish. Personally biased because I'm aking IB spanish 3 as a sophomore and will continue until (hopefully) I'm fluent-ish by senior year. Spanish is definitely more practically useful however, unless you plan on going to France or Northwestern Africa in the near future.


French chicks are hot though.

You're a fucking idiot. You listed three countries and called it global. Like people have said many African countries speak French, Quebec, France, Belgium, Switzerland. 33 countries have French as an official language.

French can be used in all of Canada, Swtizerland, Norway, Sweden, basically almost every northern European country, as well as French colonies. And it's a beautiful language, I love being fluent in French.

You've never been to Quebec then... Honestly the only place in Quebec that doesn't speak just french is Montreal, and there is half and half.. I go to Mtl at least once a year, and quebec 2 or 3 times..

You misinterpreted what I said. What I meant was he said you can use French anywhere in Canada, implying that we all know French. I am saying that a very small percentage of Canadians actually speak fluent French, so you can't use it pretty much anywhere out of Quebec 99% of the time. Especially west of Ontario.

I ask because I took 2 years of french in high school and hardly remember any of it. But I have a Hispanic last name and being able to respond when people say basic Spanish phrases would be nice.

I plan on traveling aboard after school but I'm unsure where as of now.
