Definitely not a sustainable business model. He may not have a trust fund, but he definitely has money coming in from somewhere other than first drop. Hardly anybody rides that stuff in comparison to other independent ski industry brands that clearly do more business. First Drop will be gone in 2 years, or whenever the other money dries up. Whatever comes first.

even if he did inherit every cent he has (which im pretty sure isn't the case) what difference does that make to anyone? if you like his image, buy his stuff. if you like his product, buy his stuff. if you dont, get on with it

Look man, I'm not your typical 16 year old NSer. I am actual a lot older than most of the kids on here and I also work within the outerwear industry.

If you believe that you can launch a company with $300, then you are straight up Naive.

I actually worked for an outerwear startup about 10 years ago. Prototype production cost $1500 alone, while the actual outerwear line we developed (only around 300 pieces), cost about 30k.

So when I say reeks of it, I mean that anyone with have a brain and some business experience can tell that that whole article was just another "look at me, look at me" marketing campaign put on by Lesh. Everything he does on NS is some sort of marketing scheme for his company and it usually doesn't reflect any truthful aspects of his life.

So no I don't believe that David made it on his own. I might if that article written had some truth to it

So he got startup flow from his parents? Him and I wouldnt doubt of 90% of ppl on here, skiing is a wealthy persons sport. Regardless of how he started he's having way more fun than anyone I know and probably beginning to turn profits. If you think he owns that plane your an idiot. His videos a marketing scheme? Shocker I could of sworn this is how every friday is for those guys. I wouldn't rock their gear but if your gonna hate on someone you think you know because of "being a douche" you are as the french say, "les incompetent"

Lesh actually had a good business model. He started FD with only preorders and didn't waste making any extra product when he started up. He sold everything through his own website. Didn't use any outside retailers. He didn't waste money on marketing schemes or paying out the ass for a bunch of athletes. Plus he's nigga rich. He spends the money he made on cars, planes, sleds, whatever. I'm sure he's not saving up dough he made it and he spends it.

OK folks, I was bored at work so lets do some math.

Lets look at some costs we know from the video and some of the extraneous things things not directly related to the garments (ie, revenue stream) , I think that on all of these I was pretty generous on Lesh's side and granted some of these are one time costs but lets just start here.

Athlete incentive/travel/salary for all athletes across the board  - $7000 annually
2 wrxs lease   Lets say high mileage leases on 2 new WRX's  + insurance is $400 monthly x 2  so $9600 annually
vehicle wrap  $2,500 each
wearhouse rent  $ 2,500 a month  30k annually
house rent     $300 a month    3,600 annually
plane     $5,000
hangar space   $2,400 annually
snow mobile   $5,000
_______________________
$67,600

Now that doesn't include Salary for any employees, himself, health insurance, food, gas for cars, planes, snow mobiles, or any other 'luxury items' (weed, booze, clothing, travel, etc)
I don't want to make any estimates so lets just guess that he is $1 a year above the welfare line and that all of these costs are $14,532 a year total.


So, that is his costs, I think I am being fairly generous on that front. Now lets look at FD's estimated (and I am totally spit balling here only knowing a bit about garment minimums, FOB and stuff). I left out any patterning and prototyping and assumed that this years line only had color updates. So here is a rough FOB for each item ( I might be a bit high on the jacket and low on the pant but humor me)

Costs Associated with making the product-

Fob Jacket $100
Pant     $50

25 Piece minimum per item (extremely low)
15 models jacket          $37,500
15 models pant             $18,750

So lets say that he sells 0 of these items whole sale, gives 0 of them to athletes and sells every single item he makes at 100% retail value. (I think everyone knows that this is incredibly unrealistic being that the sale prices on the site now are probably just above FOB and you can assume that they don't sell out of 100% of their gear every year, thus there being a full wearhouse in the video)

Income for items -
Jacket retail $250    $56,250
Pant $185                  $50,625

 TOTAL $$ In revenue  $108,875

Now subtracting his welfare level cost of living and the expenses totaled at the top, that leaves us with the incredibly slim profit margin of $26,743 a year. Now if we are being realistic about everything lets say he doesn't sell 100% of his gear at the maximum price, or that he doesn't live on the poverty line for food, booze and other luxuries (cars to ruin, ammo), or that he might need to prototype new gear or get samples made which are much higher one time costs, he might need an accountant once a year for his business, or web hosting fees for his site, all of that $26K goes away quickly.  Take your own conclusions from this, and honestly my numbers could be way wrong, it was a way to pass time in work, but if it was my money I wouldn't invest expecting a return.

i don't think he has a trust fund. But I also don't think outerwear is the only thing he sells.... Sure it wouldn't support him, but it would put a lil more cash in his pocket for his own expenses; and every little bit of money helps.
