As a fairly new member of the site, I wanted to ask some simple questions in regards to the park skiing community today. I enjoy a park lap just as much as the next guy, but I honestly dont understand this whole "thug steeze" culture that's been circulating the industry lately. All of these kids (cough FD cough) are literally trying to be thug and then they mask it with the whole "oh, we're just having fun" excuse which all you kids seem to eat right up. Do you think that some of these kids are dressing all thugged out in the park and making edits to ridiculously gangsta songs just because they are joking around and having fun with it? They honestly think that they can dress like that just because they can stomp tricks and look stylish while skiing. I really just don't get what's going on and how a whole community of people within one of the whitest/upscale sports industries can think that they are ghetto. Don't you guys realize that the pioneers of our sport are looking at the whole park scene in disgust because of this right now? And I'm not even talking about the big mountain dudes, but also a couple of guys that were on the forefront of park skiing a few years back.
I also was reading some arguments in regards to Henrik Harlaut and how he thinks he's black. Kids defend it by saying "its freeskiing man, we're free to do whatever we want." Yeah, I understand that, but out of all of the directions you could take your skiing style/persona, why the fuck would you take it toward Ol Dirty Bastard and Wu Tang? People need to realize that when people see that shit on the big screen, it looks fucking retarded. And I know, "who cares how people see us", right? Well maybe not all of us are 14yo hardcore NSers who cream over "E-Dollo and B-Dog". I guess it's just the idea of how delusional alot of kids are and how they convince themselves that this is okay that amazes me. I realize this thread is going to bring a ton of hate my way, and I'm sorry if it sounds meaner than it actually is, I'm honestly not trying to start anything, I just want to gain some insight from different sides on what everyone thinks about this since I'm pretty intrigued/amazed by this cute little epidemic.

its kind of ironic that you used that example because I have to wear those shirts for my stupid school. that almost solidifies my point. I am a great examplle of not caring how others dress in skiing, in fact I liked it so much that I joined it and think that it was by far the best decision in my life so far

We don’t need role models in skiing; we need free skiers in skiing. Most professionals skiers will know that it’s not only because of skiing ability that someone will make it in skiing, but a lot of it has to do with how that person differs from the hundreds of other talented skiers out there. So being your own person is important, and you can’t make everyone happy, so I welcome the hate for not zipping my jacket all the time – it’s my way of being original and if someone doesn't like me for not following the beaten path then I don't need their love.

I hate to disappoint everyone, but I don’t think I'm "gangsta" – I just prefer baggy-ass clothes to tight, rap to country, and middle fingers in the camera to smiles. I think its just an attitude that goes back to when freeskiing and especially park skiing was starting up, any sport that is not generally accepted and especially so called "extreme sports" like freestyle skiing will try to be different and stand out as a kind of cultural movement. I know that not all of the original park guys dressed like this, but the whole skiing scene is based a lot off of edits, pictures and generally watching other people. As many of the pros adopted the style (and I think a bit of it was borrowed from snowboarding at least at first) people wanted to emulate them. As a result, a "look" evolved and continued to evolve as wearing something slightly brighter or baggier than the next guy may help to get more attention for your edits, pictures and from people on the hill. And now here we are...

Personally, I don't rock huge clothing. I like my fit a bit baggy but not "thugged out" like some kids on here. honestly its just a part of the culture so don't worry so much about it and do your thing, thats what freeskiing is all about.

To me it's all to do with identity, park skiers want to be recognised as park skiers, so they create their own identity by wearing baggy clothing which makes us look G. Thats certainly one of the reasons that I started wearing bigger clothing. I think when you also see your idol skiers wearing big clothing it makes you want to as well, as these are people we want to be like and naturally want to be associated with.

It's fashion, nothing more nothing less. The "gangster" image is no more ridiculous than a "goth", "punk" or "preppy" everyday style outside of skiing. The popular "park skier" style to imitate could be any one of those or others and would still be followed by the masses, hated on by others, or completely ignored by people who genuinely don't care.

Some people wear baggy clothes, but others do not. And how many OG's are heading out to breck for ski trips? How many real "thugs" even know what saga and jibberish are? People can dress however they want. They can listen to whatever they want to. You don't get to judge anyone, you intolerant prick. Hey OP, who do you think you are? That is the style of our sport and not everyone even dresses like that. Skiers dress what is comfortable/stylee to THEM not YOU. So please kindly shut the fuck up and GTFO.

I don't give a shit what people wear. I laugh at the ones that look ridiculous, sometimes to their face if they are being a prick. But I think it's a joke when people are more worried about HOW THEY LOOK than their actual style or skiing ability. Like if you spent half as much time working on your skiing as you did picking out your outfit for the day you might not get shit on as much.

Dressing thug and looking "steezy" isn't something unique to skiing. It's in pretty much any sport. I play hockey and can't speak for the other sports, but we hang our cages from our helmet so they dangle to look steezy, but when you get hit it comes back up in your face and causes more damage than not wearing one. We also flop the tongue on our skates to look good, even though it is harder to skate. I guess it's as the old saying goes: you look good, you feel good, you play good. Sure it may be uncomfortable, but for some reason we do it anyways

I don't really care how people dress while skiing; I think its just a style of the sport. I wear large clothes when i ski, but theyre not ridiculous, i.e. below the knees. I listen to "gangst rap" because lots of music that is popular these days just plain blows... It doesnt make a huge difference to me what people like to wear and listen to and do.

Why are you judging them based on their choice of music. Its like saying just because someone is black, they can't listen to rock music because it is against their culture and all black people have to listen to rap and reggae. Let them (Henrik, Phil, etc.) listen to their music and don't hate. They use Ol Dirty and the Wu in their edits because they like that music. They feel it. It brings them good vibes. I personally am black and don't give a shit what they listen to. It is not about the music, it is about they way they ski. And Henrik and Phil are dope. It is their own personal preference to listen to whatever music they like.
