Just saw a friend post on FB about this whos in Boston right now. Whats going on? Anyone have any news updates? I can't find anything online.

i agree with you, but often the point of terrorist attacks is to spread "terror" (hence the name). if innocent people are getting blown up, other innocent people live in fear, and that's what the terrorists are trying to achieve. not trying to justify it or anything, i just don't think some al qaeda loony cares if they blow up a lawyer, a politician or a delivery man, as long as they're getting their "point" across.

on another note, whats the updates on the guy they arrested? i've been out of the loop for a bit, don't really know whats going on

i actually completely agree with this. what happened to assassination attempts and attacks on the president, politicians, and others with all the power over the people? when their job gives them the power to control the people to an extent and give/take away our freedom, it should be a somewhat life threatening job, especially when they try to fuck with those things. like, i can halfway understand that, but attacking innocent civillians, children, spectators and participants of a completely good cause, fun times sporting event? there's no purpose or logic in that, it has no effect other than to make people sad or piss them off. but past an emotional reaction i dont see what effect you could be trying get from it.

Yeah I plan on running the Newport, RI marathon to qualify. Hopefully won't be that difficult to qualify since I'm already running 8-10 miles a few times a week cause I'm doing the tough mudder in NH on June 1st. The hard part will be after qualifying at the RI marathon, staying in shape through the winter to be marathon ready in the spring.

I really hope there are tens of thousands more people at the event next year

To those of you using this tragedy as a political soapbox, stop. There will be a time and place for those discussions; it's not yet. Once you spend what is supposed to be a day of celebration and joy fearing for the lives of your friends celebrating on that block, then you can talk. Once you find out your co-worker/mentor and his two young kids were watching the marathon directly across the street from one of the explosions, then you can talk. Once you know one of your friends racing had crossed the finish line within 10 minutes of the blast, then, you can talk.

I have a lot to be thankful for. Every one of those friends I just mentioned ended up physically unharmed. I happened to be out of town for the long weekend, and without question would have been watching from that general area if I was in town, but I wasn't. I just can't handle the grandstanding of some, who can't begin to understand how close to home this hit for those of us in Boston (even if relativity unaffected). I live less than a mile from the site of the bombing, I walk that block on a weekly if not daily basis.

Ahh well, fuck em, Boston hasn't folded yet, and we won't now. #BostonStrong

while you've got a point about the scope of it not being magnified because some of us know people there, and so on...

the reason i care about this is because it's my city. People may have been killed in baghdad yesterday too. Fine. I don't give a shit about them. And they in turn, don't give a shit about me. It balances out.

I whole-hearedly agree, and it's not the general discussion that angers me. I think it is a valuable and important discussion (in fact, walking past the media circus today I felt disgusted in my own way).

It's those few folks who find this to be their political platform, without any care or respect for those who were injured or killed. I understand these folks are the vast minority and are just looking to elicit a response... and they did.

Teach me to get into an emotional topic on the internet :)

perhaps saying it balances out was poor word choice. What I meant is they don't show sympathy towards us, and I don't expect them to. And likewise, I doubt they expect me to wake up each day and show sympathy to them.

they are not shopped at all. they were actually taken by a documentary film maker named Beth Murphy. so it might support Blackbird since she is an American. But I'd still be incredibly surprised if the subjects didn't at least know the gist of what the message was.




but the biggest question is why the fuck are people doubting the condolences of Afghans for the tragedy that took place? They know what it's like more than about anyone to loose a family member or friend to a bombing. Is it really so hard to believe they'd be saddened to hear of deaths from bombings, regardless of where they happen?

Or I know, it's that you don't want them to be sorry so you don't have to feel bad about not being sorry when an innocent over there gets blown up in much the same way.

i really hope that happens next year too, and i bet it will. i know theyre gonna wanna demonstrate the resilience of the people and come back out in huge numbers

and i have no idea what your running ability is, but you'll need to up the mileage a bit to actually train for a good time. when i ran xc in highschool, we averaged 70 miles per week for the first part of the season but i would never think to try to qualify for boston. then again, i always wanted to run a marathon just to see how id do, and i never have. you'll definitely need a couple 20+ days to properly train for one, even if you only run once or twice that week. look for a local marathon training group, theres almost always a free one somewhere nearby.

The problem is that those pictures are coming from Americans.
I can almost guarantee that they are the ones asking the Afghans to pose for pictures with their signs, they are profiteering theses poor people in my opinion. If the pictures were coming from the Afghans themselves, it would be a different story.

Not at all, but pictures like that get shopped all the time. Theres been an outrageous amount of fake stories, etc that have popped up throughout this tragedy. So many people on the internet either trolling (sickos) or trying to make a buck/get followers (also sickos). Unfortunately its hard not to be cynical.

Do you know all the major cities in Afghanistan? Because I sure as hell dont. I bet some of these people have trouble getting daily news, and believe it or not. Most of these people want peace not war. These pictures have description at all of what is going on, how they got the picture, when it was taken. Some of these pictures that circulate facebook are put so far out of context. What if they really wanted to spread love to America and thought what they were doing was friendly? What if that picture was taken months before the bombing happened? Question your sources or they will give you bad information.

Well yea, it sucks it's definitely not entirely genuine. But the people who first commented tried to find fault right away and saying 'oh it's just shopped' before knowing anything about the pictures rather then taking them for what they appear to be.

would they have done the same if it were people from Israel or Japan or Austria holding up those pictures? No. It's absolutely because they felt guilty it that it seemed like people they don't give a rats ass about showed kindness to them so something HAD to be wrong.

What the do you guys know about Afghanistan people that I don't? That they are savages? I've been to the Middle East, and that is not the case. Let the peace spread.

You've never been to Afghanistan.

With your logic you could say you've been to South Africa so you know that there are no savages in sub-Saharan Africa.

Those pictures are either fake, or an opportunist photographer is going around handing them out, they all look exactly the same. Why not have them write it?
