Is it just me or is this place just overrun with the most riduculous hipster scene ever? I realize that it already has this reputation, but dear lord, every time I've turned on the Youtube Live broadcast of it, there's some hipster band that sounds god awful and looks ridiculous. And this is even coming from someone who is open to a shit ton of different genres. Who is in these crowds and how the fuck can they get down to this shit?
I'm a firm believer in this as well, and I'm not trying to make a complete hate thread, but I feel as if there are only a handful of these hipster/indie bands out there that are actually putting out good music but there's hundreds of others with hardly any talent who are just hopping on the band wagon because they know that's what everyone thinks is cool these days. I guess that goes for a lot of musical genres out there in today's day, just interesting I guess.
What you see is the product of the current musical editorial and hipster scenes respectively, wherein bands are not so much judged on the quality of their music as they are their statements and perceived "artsiness" or political affiliations. You have to understand that hipster culture is one borne for superficial reasons, and kept alive with dollars, not content. Anyone with a wallet full of money can buy in and identify with the crowd, as opposed to actual musical cultures like punk, or metal, which require some degree of commitment to penetrate.
But you are right on the fact that this years line up is pretty average. I have an enormous respect to each and everyone of them, but if you compare with last year's line up.. it's a bit meh, still sick though, I'm just tired of hearing banjo songs everywhere (eventhough they are really good, this year's 2 biggest headlines at osheaga are mumford and sons and the lumineers...)
There was also a dearth of non-hipster bands. The Violent Femmes, How to Destroy Angels, New Order, Descendants, Franz Ferdinand, Dropkick Murphys, Social Distortion, etc
It does have a hipster vibe, but there is still a lot of non-hipster music there.
