What is a good camera

literally any DSLR camera works perfectly. just make sure you get some sort of mount (tripod, monopod, glidecam, etc.)

If you could direct me to a solid video DSLR under $400, that'd be great.

OP I have a Canon HF R300 that I got for $250 because I'm broke as fuck. It shoots good video and has decent manual settings. The screen is nice and big, and the autofocus is quick. For a mount, you could invest in a flycam with your leftover money. I know people talk shit but you're clearly not serious about filming and it would do just fine. You could always sell your shit to get nicer shit in the long run.

DSLRs are great for shooting video, but look into what you are buying because there area lot of DSLRs out there that have auto focus (AF) for stills, and will AF right as you start shooting video but then cannot do continuous AF during filming. Gonna be honest though I dont thing you will find something like that for your price. Look into the Sony line of cameras, most of their DSLRs use translucent mirrors so they can direct the image both to the AF sensor and the image sensor at the same time, so you can have crazy fast AF while shooting full frame video. I personally run a Sony a65 and love it, but for that camera with a lens you are looking closer to a grand. For a little cheaper they have their NEX lineup which are pretty decent cameras for filming, I got to play around with one for a little while (my friend works at National Camera and rented one out for a day of filming).

Nikon D3100, refurb is $349 from Adorama with an 18-55 kit lens that doesn't suck too much. Sure it's their bottom of the line DSLR but it has a fair bit going for it.
Does 1080p at 24fps with video AF.
Takes pretty decent photos too in my opinion. Plus it's light and pretty small for an SLR, and best of all if you eat shit while skiing with it and destroy it then it's only $350 you've killed.

i have a D3100 and it works well. It may be "bottom of the line" as far as price goes, but dont let that fool you, it is a very good quality camera for the money
