Im traveling to France and then to london tomorrow over a span of 10 days for spring break. Now ive heard that the pickpockets are pretty bad around the popular tourist spots in france, and i assume the same for london. My question is if i catch a pickpocket in the act of tacking my wallet or his/her hand in my pocket trying to rob me, what would be the appropriate reaction to this? should i punch them in the face? or just get my wallet back if they have it and then go on with my business? so NS what do u think is the best route for such a situation?
i should mention this is a trip with my high school but my teacher who has organized this trip hasnt given me a direct answer as to what todo, air-go why im here
**Don't put yourself in that situation
Lots of pickpockets travel in pairs so you probably wont be getting it back. Once you notice someone is taking your wallet you're probably already fucked.
If you find yourself getting pickpocket then sure, hit him and get your shit back.
Also, try keeping a dummy wallet (real cheap and empty, maybe the hotel address in it)
A guy on my trip had his wallet stolen on the subway in Barcelona. He said that there were two really hot chicks making out and stripping eachother then the doors opened and 4 people got on and surrounded him. one guy was pretending to be disabled (he put on some act) and managed to stick his hand down the guys pocket and steal the wallet (in a low pocket of cargo shorts). This guy knew it was happening but didnt do anything about it because he was alone and surrounded.
If its a school trip you can easily travel in groups, youll be left alone.
ive never been pick-pocketed when visiting london, but if i caught someone in the act i would definitely beat the shit out of them. pick-pockets are normally scrawny little rats anyway, right?
ya ive heard of some of the "distractions" that they will do, and that will often work in teams one distracts other steals, but even with a group like this we will be in packed places all the time and can often get separated but idk what its gonna be like really
oh also, dont bet anything in those street gambling games. usually 90% of the people there are a part of the scam and the people winning the money are part of the game.
but man, just keep an eye out and you should be fine.
I have a lot of family in Europe, and my dad travels a lot. One time when we were in paris we had a 35 hour layover or some crazy ass time, so we went to town a lot. First time on the metro, my brother gets pick pocketed. Second time on there my dad falls prey. We went to town one more time the next day. My dad had an idea to not get pick pocketed. He taped thumbtacks in his pant pocket. When we were riding the metro home. I see a guy standing near my dad. We knew he had was trying to pickpocket him cause he jerked his hand out really fast and walked away gritting his teeth. Unfortunately I was victim to another thief and lost a few euros
Watch out for little kids. In Rome this summer I had a group of young girls (7-8 years old) bump into me and almost lean on me before causing a commotion and having an even younger girl try to reach into my purse. Your best bet is to not carry a backpack because it is so easy for people to get into and to keep your wallet in a front pocket.
This will sound bad but 99% of the pickpockets you see will be Albanian. They are extremely sneaky. I know a guy who had his wallet stolen that was in his breast pocket that had a button on it. Also, beware of scams. Most of the time if someone comes up to you with a clipboard asking you to donate to the blind/deaf/etc. it is a scam.
Was in Paris a few weeks ago. Noone tried pickpocketing my mom or I. Just always keep an eye out and keep your phone/wallet/money in your front pockets even if it's uncomfortable it's better than having than having them stolen. The Metro honestly wasn't that sketchy feeling at all. Keep your hands in your pockets holding your stuff if you really want. The bus system and is super easy goes everywhere quickly. Felt super safe on them.
Also, be aware of scammers.
When in tourist areas watch out for [usually] older Hispanic women walking around. They'll come up to you and act like they found a gold ring on the ground and try to give it to you and demand money. Just walk away when they come up to you.
Also, don't sign any petitions from younger adults who ask you if you speak English. They'll claim it's like a pledge to help poor children, but really it's some kind of acceptance to pay them.
Thought I should just mention that stuff. And I just realized I didn't answer your question. Oops.
Dad got our camera stolen in Paris a few years back.
