Steepest Inbound Skiing--- East Coast

Wondering what are some of the steepest and most challenging runs to ski in the east

Inbound Skiing, not like Tuckerman's Huntington

Ive never been to MRG, people seem to hype that up

no. sunday river doesnt get to be mentioned in this thread. its about steepest in bounds skiing, not longest cross-cut or the only place in the east where you can ski literally all day and only take a small handfull of runs

I don't know how you can get "only a handful of runs" unless it's your goal to go from Whitecap to Jordan all day long, but whatever.

It doesn't.

I grew up back east, moved out west, and became a MUCH better skier.  The skiers in the east are not better skiers, anyone who believes that is delusional.

Squaw Valley has stuff that is much scarier than anything at MRG.  Don't get me wrong, I will always have love for Mad River, but it is not nearly as steep as Squaw.

I love MRG. Only been one day, definitely didn't get to any of the steeps that people are talking about haha I didn't think anything was super steep. Definitely one of my favorite mountains, can't wait to get back there again.

Steepest I have ever skied was probably Tucks Chutes at Jay or the ridge. I haven't skied Tucks chutes in years, so maybe it's not that steep. Off the top of the Summit chair at Sugarbush has some real steep chutes if you duck into the woods in the right spot.

Steepest groomer? Stein's at Bush is ridiculous. Especially when it is ice.

What kind of day did you find Stein's to be icy right after they've groomed it? Do you mean legitimately icy, or just skied off the way groomers get near the end of the day?

Everything this man says is 100% truth.

I've ridden the lift with SLers who said they have lived out west skiing Alta/Deer Valley and they think Sugarloaf has just as gnarly terrain, but is harder to ski. It's like a cult up there. Loaf is legit as fuck even by west coast standards.

Whiteface has been my home mountain my whole life and I still haven't been there on a day when the slides were open. But they look like they're pretty gnarly and the funnest place to be on the East-Coast when they're open.

Ripcord is pretty damn steep, and it's long. It's just a pain in the ass to ski when there's moguls on it

I've also skied the lift line and black hole at Smuggs. I never thought of them as some of the gnarliest in the east until I saw this thread...cool to know I've skied some of the steepest hills in the east now though

No its actually not even steep at all. Im guessing most people in this thread have skied killington and no one has even mentioned it.

I cant say for sure what the steepest run Ive ever skied is but I wanna give the Rumor at Gore a little credit. I remember being a little kid and sliding forever when I fell on the headwall. The slides at whiteface are pretty dope but Ive never really noticed the steepness being difficult. And paradise at mad river is pretty fucking sick and technical but the last time i skied it, it was a sheet of ice so my perception is a little off

I think Sugarloaf is pretty overrated. It's great if you love steep groomers, but they groom too much, and the glades aren't all that good, at least compared to a lot of places in vt. It is steep, though, no doubt.

the rumor is steep but just isnt fun to ski, its always so fucking blown out. My brother and i did have one awesome day when they winched a groomer up it and you could actually make turns.

Rumor isn't that bad. The head wall is gnarly but that's like 20 yards, then it kinda bellys out. The hardest thing about it is skiing through the moguls and gapers on the steeper parts.

Rumor and lies only have challenging headwall, nothing compared to actual headwalls outwest

Theres a few small out of operation mountains around that area like Hickory that have gnarly liftlines

learning to ski on gnarly steep ice > learning to ski on fluffy awesomeness

east coast mogul skiers are the most technical skiers there are. skiing out west is important for taking your game to the next level since the east sucks, but as far as skiing mechanics and fundamentals that will keep you alive on the sketchiest terrain anywhere, you cant beat learning in the east.

obviously not universal since elite skiers can come from anywhere, but forward pressure and edge control are an afterthought for many skiers who grew up skiing in the west

Took this from another thread. Someone said they skied this line. I've skied the same thing and didn't duck a rope to do it. Not sure what it's called or if it even has a name but it's for sure the steepest thing on the East Coast. The top is a steep and short chute and the run out was one of the least ski-able things I've ever made my way down. Trees were so tight.

To all the people saying Sugarloaf I ski there a couple times a week and I went to Jay for the first time this weekend and there's nothing at the loaf that can even compare to some of the stuff at Jay, I found myself out of my comfort zone for the first time in a while

If you're talking about the open-ish line on the left that's Green Beret. Steep but not that crazy, the headwall at the top is the only real steep part. The trees are freakin perfect though I must say. The face chutes are far steeper.

face chutes honestly arent even fun to ski, we hit them after a 2+ foot storm and you could still barely ski 10 feet without stopping because theres so much rock and the snow gets blown off. jay has plenty of other gnarly stuff in the woods though, probably the best in the east that ive skied. like someone else said sugarloaf is really steep and the runs are long, but they groom everything. i cant think of one trail at loaf with cliffs and drops and shit, which there is a ton of at jay. the glades at sugarloaf are pretty sick doe. tram line at cannon is also gnar as fuck Click for larger image

Mad River Glen's paradise is definately the hardest in bound. Tuckemans is crazier though, ive skied both. (Even though ik we werent including backcountry)

Well Brackett sucks, but everyone knows that. The others are okay, good even, but not great, and certainly overrated compared to a lot of stuff you can find in vt. Problem with sugarloaf is it's a huge mountain on just one peak. Everything is really compact and doesn't leave much space for unmarked glades, which is where you're going to find the best skiing in the east

never been to mad river glen but its definitely one of the most hardcore ski areas on the east.

at sugarbush there is a glade off to the left of the north ridge quad at ellen that is next to the trail under the lift. Steepest glades ive ever skied. got lost in them a couple of times actually. Lets not forget lifeline at sugarbush either although id more categorize that as the rockiest in bound skiing.

Bravo woods, maybe? And, speaking of liftline, the woods between liftline and castle rock run are pretty damn tough. Super steep and very tight trees.

Stowe has some good inbounds steeps, upper starr, national headwall, plenty of stuff not on the map that;s even steeper such as the pipeline and the waterfalls

As an EC transplant I can say this 100%.

As for EC gnar, Jay is steep, Loaf is almost as steep, Whiteface (the slides) are pretty gnar even on west coast standards, Tremblant has some great steeps but pretty much all off trail and you'd have to buy me quite a few pitchers at Caribou for me to open my mouth.

you obviously dont know where to go to find some good steep trees and glades. and yeah brackett isnt the best, but thats only if you dont know where to go and follow all of the old people and little kids that go in there just to say they did it.

if youre wiling to duck ropes, there are some pretty crazy lines out of bounds at sloaf where you can get back to a lift easily or walk to a road a short ways away. ie. hells gate, adrenaline, west bowl, and the elevator shaft

The one thing that I will say is that west chutes tend to be more sustained, meaning that they can bend on the way down.   What this means is, if you make one mistake controlling your sluff, you've got about a .1% chance of making it out alive.  You're gonna tumble, you're gonna slam sidewall. I feel like thats much more difficult to find on the east (and yes I'm a transplant)

I've really only gotten to ski the Loaf consistently, so I can't vouch for any lines elsewhere. That said, I think Sugarloaf is great (but probably not the best). There aren't any cut cliffs on actual trails like there are at other resorts, nothing really gnar and cleared 100%. Nitro, Gondi, and the FF snowfields are awesome and long as fuck, great terrain in that sense. Woods are fun as hell too, there's some great stuff in brackett and above it (hells gate, backside, etc). Gladed cliffs are decent, I've explored some crazy shit on Burnt that hopefully can be hit next year.

bahhahahah. if theyre really claiming that its just a straight up lie. I honestly have never found any trails at killington challenging in the slightest. Theres gonna be people who say otherwise but i skied all their doubles in like 4th grade with no issues and I didnt even ski that much back then
