We are all in different stages in life, but generally pretty young and still figuring life out. Some of us know exactly where we want to be in 5 years. Some of us have no idea.
What do you want to do? Who do you want to become? What do you want to accomplish?
Post your dreams and aspirations here.
I've been thinking about this lots lately. I am just graduated with a social work degree in fall and have been working with the provincial government in child protection and now with youth. It's a good job, I'm getting great experience and, for a social worker, it pays pretty decent. That said, I've decided I eventually want to do more than handing out welfare to ungrateful teenagers or apprehending babies from drunk parents. I also know this is the profession I want to be in.
Lots of the kids I work with, don't have any kind of healthy ways of dealing with stress, so they get involved in substance abuse, violence and gangs. I see it day in, day out. There are drop-in centers that offer "cultural activity", but just end up being havens for gang and prostitution recruitment. It's brutal.
A huge part of my life has become weightlifting, particularly olympic weightlifting. I've found one of the most relaxing things I can do after a super stressful day is to just go lift heavy stuff. It takes my mind off all the crap I have to deal with everyday and I focus on making good lifts. I leave and the stress is gone.
I would love get more experience, training (both as a lifter and as a coach) to open a small drop-in gym, specifically for youth/young adults. It would either be free or super cheap and open during the day, everyday. I (and whoever else) could offer training, but also provide a safe place during the day that offers some structure and teaches some responsibility and offers the opportunity for mentorship, counselling, referrals to outside agencies, whatever other help I can think of, etc, etc. I want the opportunity to build into some kids and do what I can to help.
It's not a penthouse or a spot on the fortune 500 (not that there's anything wrong with those), but it's my dream.
