Photo question

So last night me and some friends tried to take pictures where you like write stuff in the air with glow sticks or stuff like that. anyways they all just end up looking like a blur. I just set the camera on a really long shutter speed, which is how I thought you did it. anyone have some tips or tricks on how to do this?

You have to put it at one long shutter speed (or bulb) and put it on a tripod. If the camera moves during it than it will just come out as a big blur

Long shutter, tripod is quite important. Perhaps post examples? That would be the easiest way for us to help.
