Dogs in truck beds

If I put my 5 yr old Golden in my truck bed for a drive will he flip shit and jump out? We never put him in one as a puppy (Idk how you teach a dog this)

Anyone wanna help me out?

Heres the problem, if you put a collar and leash on him, if he jumps out hes hanging himself. If you dont, he can jump out. The solution is 2 lines that run parallel across the bed of the truck and 2 anchor points on his collar so he cant roam the bed of the truck without you worrying.

no. just no. put seat covers on and let him in the cab, or put a crate in the back so he's properly restrained. I've seen a dog jump out of the bed on the interstate and get drilled by a semi. I've also seen dogs hang themselves from their collars. Either way, not good.

I've put my dog in the back of my jeep with no top on almost everyday during the summer. With the top down its essentially the same thing as a pickup truck bed. She's also been trained not to leave the bed no matter what unless she is called by me. She'll just sit in the back of the jeep sticking her head out whether were on the highway, side streets or I'm parked at a store and have to run inside for a few minutes. I get a lot of looks driving around boston with a dog in the back

If you have any doubts about it, don't do it. Wait until your next dog and train them young.

Well I just took him into town before i saw all these death stories and he did fine, but started getting sketchy when an 18 pulled beside us.

Everything was fine though

OP - you have a dog and your worried about getting hair in your truck? what about your entire fucking house? You can't deal with hair you dont get a dog...or you get one of those gay hypoallergenic poodle mixes

He might have been fine for this trip, but what happens next time your driving down the road and he sees aanother dog walking dog the street? Or there is a cat that runs across the road after you drive by? Just because you went on one real short trip doesn't mean he's trained to be in the back of an open top vehicle...dumb move by you

We used to do it when we had a cover over our truck bed. but I mean really, it's dangerous. Even a fender bender and your dogs going to go flying.

Get off of my dick, it's not like I took him on the interstate. And I don't give a fuck about the hair, I'm wearing a black shirt right now, and guess what is all over it? Dog hair. I don't plan on changing shirts anytime soon.

I don't give a fuck about the hair (Honestly, after living with a Golden for 5 years you think I give a shit about dog hair?), I just don't want to constantly vacuum my backseat when I want to hang with a girl or friends.

And he's not skittish like that, we passed multiple dogs and he just stayed chill as always. He did fine and I'm going to ease him into it.

Instead of going into threads on NS and asserting your hyper-machoism and dumb assumptions, go find something else better to do with your time

This.  I've seen dogs fall out of trucks when guys go around corners, leave from a stoplight, and hit their brakes.

Crate, or cab.  My dog sits in the cab, and I just vacuum up his hair and keep a container of wipes under the seat for paw prints/drool.

Seriously, just stop talking. Trucks use my town as a cut-through to I-40 (plus an 18 wheeler didn't "fly" by me, just pulled beside us at a light. Perhaps you should read the posts before you make yourself look like a bumbling idiot).

And I never said I didn't like what everyone had to say, I appreciate their input, seeing as I asked for it. I just told you to fuck off because you started acting like a douche and assumed I was going to start dragging my own dog down the interstate.

Thanks for the input. In light of all these god-awful experiences ya'll shared I'm probably going to only let him ride on really backwoods/deserted roads and nothing near semi's, thanks for all the help.

OP i wouldnt risk it. Your going to feel way worse if something happend than you will for vacuming out your truck once in a while. My dad grew up in texas and always had dogs that were fine in the back of a truck. When he met my mom he took her dogs in the back of his truck not thinking anything of it and one jumped out. luckily the dog was ok but its scary shit.

nice looking golden you have there. goldens are the best.

a dog without a seatbelt in the cab will do pretty much the same thing for most crashes. OP im gonna trust ur judgement because I feel like dogs that arent dumb as shit have pretty good intuition and of course you know ur dog better than anyone.

What happens when you pull up next to a bunch of idiots that see a dog and think 'how cute, let me whistle to him to get his attention' then he jumps out and goes to see the people etc.. there are a million reasons why not to take an untrained dog and put it in the back of a pickup truck

I kept my dog in the bed of my truck till he jumped. Luckily he was ok, but since then I bought a harness (no choking) that attaches to the seatbelt in case of accident. He sets off the seat belt alarm anyway so I thought it would be good. Plus sudden breaking throw them into the dash so.

simmer down hun. I agree that it safer to keep them in the cab, but life is a game of percentages and the percentage of a dog dying in the cab is for example .0003 and out of the cab like .0004. Its op's opinion how much that ten-thousanth of a decimal place means to him.

If you care about your dog then don't be a dick and put a crate in the bed of the truck that's secured down. Ive seen a dog, ( a golden i might add) fall out of a truck from a guy simply turning a corner. I then watched the dog crawl out of the road and collapse. The guy didn't even realize what had happened.

If you care about your dog then get a seat cover and deal with the hair or put a crate in the back. Simple as that.

get a dog harness and put him on a leash that's short enough so he can just barely get his head out.

my dog rides shotty though. I even have a harness that clips to the seat belt. yay for me.

Neglect is a form of abuse. If you put an untrained dog in the back of a pickup truck you are not providing adequate care to the dog you are responsible for....I don't see how that's a stretch to say it's abuse

Defiantly a gray line, that is for sure.

I lived in Mississippi for a while. Very common out there. But so were crates for hunting dogs. However, that is because hunting dogs are worth dollar signs to some (obvi not all) of those red necks. They will just leave their dog out there if they don't come back simply because it is worthless to them if it can't hunt. Real fucked up..plenty of loose beagels at Camp Shelby, MS

my dog rides in the back of the truck all the time without a leash. I like having him in the cab whenever possible just for company. I don't think he's much safer though, he hangs so damn far out the window
