Ok I can't take this shit anymore. I've drastically changed several of my friends opinion's of Kendrick so I might as well try online.
Good Kid m.A.A.d. City and by extension Kendrick Lamar is one of the most misunderstood rap albums/rappers of all time. The album touches on a number of themes including: racism, ignorance of youth, cultural expectations, religious themes, peer pressure, substance abuse, loyalty to one's friends/family/city, revenge, and finally redemption. Not only does it touch on all of these but in their discussion Kendrick shows a moral understanding that I have never seen within rap.
To judge an artist off of one or two songs is like tearing two pieces off a painting and judging the painter from them. Unfortunately with "iTunes Top 100" and the trend of singles being released this seems to be the trend. What's really sad is that many people do not have the context set by the songs before so they miss out on references or a story unfolding. This is the case with Kendrick. Let's take his most popular and misunderstood song "Swimming Pools" for example. Many people think that this song is about "Kendrick going to the club and getting drunk." In reality it's Kendricks commentary on how our generation abuses alcohol as a crutch/ means of escapism and how people justify their poor behavior by using peer pressure to come down to their level. It's horribly ironic that this song has had it's message twisted to the exact opposite of it's actual intention. Kendrick Lamar says it best "How can I paint this picture when the colorblind is hanging with ya"
If you consider yourself a fan of rap your owe it to yourself to listen to this album in full. The entire album is on youtube, search to it and listen to it. I have over 100 rap albums in my library dating from early 80s to 2013 and ranging from A Tribe Called Quest to Death Grips. Good Kid m.A.A.d. City is my 3rd favorite rap album. Please don't insult something you don't understand.
Sorry for poor grammer or misspelling. I was taking a break from homework and I felt the need to type this out real quick. Back to calc.
