The cameras you SHOULD be buying - Canon XA 20/25 and G30
If you're considering getting into filmmaking/skiing videography, I HIGHLY suggest you look at the g30/xa20 over cameras like a 60d, t2i, 7d, etc. They offer 1080p60, dual SD card slots, and a bunch of other features that you'd benefit from over a dslr.
definitely looks like they stepped up their game a bit compared to the xa10 - that thing was garbage for the price. i'd still way rather take an hmc150 over these though.

Also-good call Jamie. those camera's are pretty sweet. the only question I have (im too lazy to read up) is do they have XLR inputs? or do you need an adapter? clearly not a huge deal. just a matter of preference

With widespread 1080p support online and its common for the average user has a 1080 screen, shooting 1080p60 is ideal imo.
It's also not just shooting 720vs1080 it depends on how the camera performs. Ie the Canon dslrs have about 800 lines of res so 1080p doesn't look much better than 720 because it's upresing the 800 lines to 1000. But cameras like the gh3 or fs100 have 1000 lines of res so the 1080p looks significantly better than others @1080

Question: How practical and versatile is that lens though? I feel like for 2 grand I would just save up another grand or so and buy like an FS100 or something so I can continue using my lens with a converter and get better quality.

Honestly, I'd highly recommend one of these to almost anyone as a separate tool from their A-camera setup. I'd love one for shooting the long-shot at weddings.
I sorely miss the time when beginning videographers couldn't get distracted by shallow DOF and general DSLR butt-fuckery and instead used video cameras that forced them to rely on composition. I feel like DSLRs just feed into beginner's honeymoon syndrome and in general it takes a lot of people longer to actually get good.
