I've read recently that bear spray (pepper spray) is more effective than gun in situation with bear... it was due to how fast thebear will move vs how much the gun owner will panic and not take well placed shot.. if you think you would not panic you have not been in a stressful situation recently..
just yesterday my Pandora came on by accident in public and I got really nervous and could not figure out how to shut it off could you imagine that was a bear and the phone was my gun..

yup, bearspray has certainly proved to be way more effective. Carrying a 45 acp instead of bearspray is just fucking stupid. At the least you should have a 44 magnum.

hollows and 3 well placed shots would do the trick. Maybe not a giant grizzly but a black for sure. Ive been very very close to a few blacks and have no doubt about that

good luck getting 3 well placed shots on an attacking bear. And it's not "maybe not" an attacking grizzly bear. You would be very very lucky to stop a grizzly with a 45 acp. Hollows would be even fucking stupider, you wont reach anything with it.

Bottom line is you should keep bearspray on your hip and optionally a 12 gauge with slugs over your shoulder or on your pack.

Also he wants to get a hand gun for my mom so they can take the concealed carry class and shoot together, and have an excuse to shoot something else on the regular, and she's all for it.

He was looking at the Glock 26 but again hes never been big into shooting until a few weeks ago so anything I should suggest to him?

If youre going to carry a long gun for the sole purpose of stopping an attacking beat a shotgun still isnt the way to go. Give me my AK with 40 rounds and I will give you a dead grizzly every single time.

uh unless you plan on going into the bush with a full auto weapon that is just fucking stupid.

shotgun is the second best bear defense behind bearspray. Only reason you wouldn't take it is if you already were carrying a rifle for big game.

lol at people giving a shit about what kind of firearm will take down a fucking bear, because, you know, most people carry concealed weapons in case a bear attacks them in the middle of the city. If I recall correctly, that's what this thread is about, is it not?

I am not going to carry my .45 ACP in the woods for the sole purpose of defending against a bear.  Up at my cabin in the UP I am more concerned about defending myself against a wolf, mountain lion etc.  I have only seen a few bears up there in my time spent there.

i'll take my chances with 40 shots, especially under that much stress. 7.62.x39 can do plenty of damage.

Those guns are for little bitches. I already said that. If you went to alaska with it you would just get laughed at. You don't need a fucking handgun when you go to the mall and it's not going to do you any good in the wilderness.

Bro get over it already, if you are referring to me which I am guessing you are, no one specifically carries a .45 for bear defense.  I do not live in Alaska and if I were to I wouldn't carry that for Bear defense.    A shotgun or my LR-308 would take down a bear but no one wants to carry that around with them slung over their shoulder. 

^This isn't even what this thread is about so lets drop the whole what gun can kill a bear discussion its pointless.

wait, we are talking about a semi automatic rifle right?

I've never shot an AK but I'm assuming it's less powerful than a 308 and I can sure as hell tell you I would rather have a 12 gauge slug over a 308 or a 300 win mag.

just because you can go through a bear doesn't mean you are gonna stop it. have you even seen a fucking grizzly bear running?

i can spam the trigger so fucking fast its not even funny. hell, my gun was built to bumpfire. when i get home i will upload a video of my semi auto AK and you tell me if you think it could stop a bear.

id rather have a 308, duh. and i meant that its going to go through and hit the goods.

but wisc is right, this is stupid. there arent brown bears where i live. there are criminals though, and im pretty sure my AK would stop them just fine

I fail to see how defending myself against an armed criminal is being a pussy?  If a criminal is armed why shouldn't I be?  You have absolutely no reasoning for what you believe.  If you do I would be interested to hear it.  If someone wants to do harm to me why should I just roll over and let them?  

  This is what happened to my friends uncle years ago.  After my experiences of being held up for my wallet and my friend losing his uncle I have no patience for gangbangers looking to rob people.  They have no value for human life and if its me or them, I am choosing my life every time.
