I'm all for more effective background checks and getting rid of any loopholes or anything that might exist that could end up getting guns into the wrong hands. This is something I dont understand why the pro-gun people are so up tight about. if you can still get your guns and still dont have to register them, whats the big deal with waiting another hour or two, even waiting a day wouldnt bother me if it meant they background checks were more effective and in depth. the only way I could see that getting out of hand is if theres a history of mental illness in a family, they start denying people the purchase of a gun for unrelated misdemeanor crimes, etc..
And this is why i would really like to see where the majority of guns used in gangs and inner city crime come from, I remember reading something awhile ago that talked about the source of guns used in crimes, ill try to find it again, but if i remember right I think the majority were sold through illegal firearm dealers, who got them from multiple sources, stolen guns, illegally through licensed dealers, etc.. some were bought by someone else, like a friend or family member, and some were sold through private, but licensed gun dealers, meaning they are legally able to purchase and sell guns(obviously giving them huge access to guns) and selling/trading them through kind of back door sales or selling them to distributers.
something else i was reading about the huge increase of mexican gangs was saying that they are bringing a huge gun smuggling/trade with them, mexico supposidly does a horrible job of controlling gun (and drug) trafficking coming in from all over the world.
theres obviously a large illegal gun trade and market. and its hard to say how much effect a complete ban would have. Id argue that it would only open up a much bigger market for illegal gun trade, and more trade between mexico. I think an effective would be to really crack down on the licensed dealers selling illegally, as thats pretty ridiculous that a dealer licensed by the government can easily deal guns illegally. as well as any other major sources. even more effective would be to sort out our horrible inner city poverty and crime problem that pretty much breeds and encourages crime.
going back to what you said about those stats. id agree, i see so many stats and graphs and arguments that argue for both sides. I honestly think its less about laws and regulations and more about that specific society. you look at any of the top countries for gun related crime and many have very different gun laws in place, most being very strict. but i dont think their gun violence is a result of strict gun control, i think its the violent culture, regardless of what laws are in place.
