back country kickers

I just got a pack shovel so now im ready to go out and build some kickers.....any1 know anything about making em, how long it takes and how difficult it is with a pack shovel...any info is appreciated

well make them out of big cubes, and make sure the cubes r made of snow, and make sur the jump width wise is a little bit longer than your ski, and twice the length of your ski length wise. and a downhill landing, made of snow, and a nice booter gets you sex.

yeah, what he said, and dont try to make a perfect transition, use big ass chunks and cubes and shave out a sweet transition for ur distance/landing steepness/whatver

make sure you plan for a good 2 hours of build time AT LEAST, depends on the setup

easiest way to start is by rolling big snowballs..you can break them up as required....but it gets the snow to the jump without a shovel a lot easier..(since you probably will have people there that don't have a shovel...)

First collect snow...Second make jump....

yea i just dropped 30 on a shovel....and that was after quite a bit of shopping around....skiing is expensive

As far as time goes it all depends on how many people you have. I like 3-4 people. That way you can build quickly but everyone still gets to hit it a bunch before the landing is all bombed out. It usually takes us about 3-4 hours to build a 6-7 foot tall booter. For building I'm a big fan of the block method. Dig down til you find a solid layer an cut blocks out of it and stack them. Start with the corners so you keep it wide. Use skis and snowboards to stack against and build the jump as wide as possible. I can't stress that enough because the sides of your jump always end up sloping downward so the base is always wider that the top. I like the top to be about 5-6 feet wide so the base is like 7-8. It's just really nice to have a wide jump and is well worth the extra time it takes to make it big.

Don't do stupid things like making your landing zone on top of a cornice or avalanche startzone (people do this every year at Loveland Pass).

Speaking of avalanches......the summit of stowe is above the treeline so its all open snow....its only at most 150-200 vertical feet at the most....should i be worrying about avalanches here?

It depends on the layering of the snow and the pitch of the hill. Take an avalanche class. It can save your life.

25ft can slide. Treed slopes too (if you can ski it, the trees won't *always* hold it). There are many variables.

I want to but theres no classes within a reasonable distance of me cuz i live in new jersey and well.....new jersias typically dont have avalanche problems....so its gonna be hard to do.

The East Coast isn't really known for avalanches. You guys don't get big enough storms and have a lot of ice which is of course a very stable layer in the snowpack. I wouldn't worry too much unless you get a storm that drops a lot of sno in a short period of time. If it does do that just wait 4 or 5 days for it to settle.

Make sure you clear a solid 30 to 40 ft from the jump to where you land.. i would reccomend making the jump 30 or 40 ft from where the landing hill STARTS.. then u can take it down a lil furhter and make it sexy

NO avalanches in the east coast? apparently you've never heard of Mt Washington and Tuckermnas Revine. At tuckermans revine like 15 people die a year in avalanches. And MT Washington has the worst weather in the world (highest recorded wind speed and extremly cold like -80 or colder. BUt then again youre talking about mt stowe so...

That's a slight TUCK's exageration, and most slides happen in Feb, before we ski it, usually we deal with ice chunks that roll down like boulders, quite dif than AVI's

Over fifteen people have died up there in a year (84 i believe) but it usually only 1 or two unlucky climbers in the winter.....tucks has mad slides though....whenever theres fresh snow that slop slides like crazy....i waited up there for 4 days to ski it just skiing over at wildcat until the advisorys were dropped....there are mos def avalanches out in tucks.....if you want the accident reports from like the past 8 years you can go to tuckerman.org i believe is the site and it gives u em along with some info on skiing teh ravines

who would hose the landing, isnt the purpose of backountry jumps to land in powder, so u can try new stuff, or just go really huge? wtf

Pick a landing hill that is not over exposed and dig a snow pit before anything to see if the snow is decent. if it appears safe you can use your pit to start making blocks of snow. waiting a few days after a strom is a good idea saftey wise and because it allows the snow to melt slightly makeing it better for build since there will be a higher humidty in it. other than that there is some good advice above i trust your intelligent enough to figure out what advice to take and what not to take. (ie., ice over the landing, BAD IDEA) And building a jump isnt exactly rocket sience. Have fun
