This question has been bothering me all day and i havent been able to answer it myself, so i wanted other peoples opinions. Lets say hypothetically there are two skiers, The first skier who can cleanly do 1 trick for example a cork 7 with a nice grab, and the second skier who can do say, rode 5, cork 7, cork 9 sloppily with no grabs. And my question is who would you find better?
pretty obvious IMO, i'd take the kid with hat one super clean trick any day because that just proves he has the dedication and ability to get more tricks that clean. what good is rushing and learning all these tricks if you can't do them well? you're not getting praised for sloppy tricks
You could also argue though that it depends on what you're judging them on. I mean if the second guy only does one trick all day every day, I might say that after a bit of time it gets boring. If the first guy does all kinds of wild stuff, sure I wouldn't like his style but he'd probably be pretty entertaining to watch.
These 3 points are my exact point. Im stuck and i dont know which skier id rather want to watch. On one hand a skier who can cleanly do one trick is nice to watch but on the other hand a skier who has a bag of sloppy tricks is also nice to watch but neither of them have big enough points to give me a clear choice.
Well, still stuck i guess. Lots of controversy over this still. So what if there were 3 jumps? Obviously the skier who could do the 3 different tricks would be better. But what if there was only 1 jump. Obviously the cork 7 tail would be better. I was also thinking though, A skier who could do more than one trick would be much more versatile and would seem better because s/he has pushed him or herself to try more, BUT at the same time the other skier would have pushed him or herself to perfect the cork 7. Still stuck.
me and my friend are basically this exact thing. I can throw spins and shit and cork 7s and rode 5s but my friend focuses more on pressing on rails and dialing his style. Idk personally i like trying new things and going out of my comfort zone but for watching video i would for sure prefer presses and clean tricks.
I used a competition that I competed in recently as a place to test this theory. Many guys were doing pencil 7's and 9's, and I threw a cork-ish tweaked safety five, with pretty much the same rail tricks as the other guys. I ended up winning the competition. 2nd and 3rd were the 2nd and 3rd most stylish of all the competitors. So, in this competition style was definitely the biggest factor. I think the judges preferred style over hucking in this comp, to answer OP's question.
