Recommend a car

so come this summer i need to buy a new car.
necessities
good gas milage - doing multiple seattle-boulder trips a year along with near daily drives to the mountain
midsize - must be able to carry a lot of gear/belongings (need to bring everything with me at the beginning/end of the summer between seattle-boulder). i dont need/want a massive car that will kill gas milage.
comfortable - 2+ hours behind the wheel won't suck.

so far my options/ideas are
ford escape (have been driving my families for the past 3 years and may have the opportunity to buy it from them, so its a good option)
jeep grand cherokee
subaru forester

ideally, i would like to spend around 6-7 grand, but could possibly take out a larger loan and go up to 10, but i would rather not.

Also don't say impreza/wrx/outback. They are too small for what my needs are so I wouldn't buy one

Ford Escape - Not good on gas and a semi-unreliable car from my friends experiences.
Any Jeep- horrible gas mileage, decent reliabilty if maintained properly.
I am by no means a subaru fanboy but the forester is probably your best option here. If you can take really good care of it then maybe you can avoid any potentially expensive repairs.

ford explorer, had 350+ miles on it. it was running good but the interior got wet and one day i got in and everything was covered in mold so i donated it to the rescue mission.

Before you make a decision on ANY car, check out http://carcomplaints.com and edmunds.com to see common problems and specs on the car like gas mileage, safety rating, and any other specs you could possibly want. Good luck man. May the internet guide your path towards an awesome, reliable car.

I loved driving it up to tahoe though because I could go fast around the turns and paddle shift.
I have a truck that gets 11 mpg and is lifted so I couldn't go that fast in corners or make it up with ought cringing at my gas meter

Yeah I would definitely say Forrester if your main focus is good gas mileage.

Get a honda crv. Its got AWD, very decently sized. Has an i4 so its reliable and cheap to run, all while getting above average gas mileage. This is your car.

sirfrancisbacon has a crv, its sweet, never runs out of gas cuz andrew has money and goes super fast cuz its stuck in 4th gear all day.

any subaru in the 6-7 grand range will most likely need the CV axles/head gasket and timing belt replaced unless the previous owner specifically states that he/she had this work done. even then i'd ask for receipts

Bottom line is you can't be picky in that price range even if its not quite what you want. Go to your local mechanic (s) and ask around and become bros with them. Thas what I did and ended up getting an absolute steal on my jetta just because I was friendly and got to know them a bit. Buy them a 30 rack and some lunch one day and ask if they have any good cars around. Tell them you will bring it in for servciing.

Lol volvo XC70. My mom loves hers. No way it would be big enough for op. my skis dont even fit in the back, they stick into where the passengers sit. Its a good car though, but once they have 100k+ on them they are maintenence nightmares.

yeah, you have to put the seat down for them to fit. what's the problem? also, if you maintain it correctly just like you should on every other car, it'll be fine.

Yeah, it's an auto but it has that sport mode which is actually pretty fun.
My girlfriends is red so it's not too bad I guess haha

I'd say the best choice for you is a  impreza/wrx/outback. Plenty of room for anything you would need.

not only good space inside, but if you put a spoiler on it, it gets easily 5 more mpg. and then slamming it will get you another 15 or so because of less drag. go for the impresa/wrx/outback.

This. My mom has one and you can fit anything inside if you put the back 2 seats down, and there pretty damn good in snow

He obviously doesnt want a honda fit. I dont blame him. Is if the car doesnt look bad enough, throwing a box or rack on top would probably overload the poor little thing and its 1.5L I4

I have a 2003 saab 9-3 it is a 5-speed, that i got for just under 7k two years back and has been reliable since... plenty of room and I have done plenty of 2+ hour drives and it is comfortable.. Folding down the backseat leaves plenty of room for skis and still two passengers in the backseat.
