We got on our way with a few spots on the first mile that we had to maneuver over ice to get passed them. Once we hit the mile mark we came to a spot where the ice was every where. We thought going over the ice would be the best idea but boy were we wrong, we got wedged into the point part and tried to scooch over the ice but when I put my paddle down to the ice to try and move us forward, the ice broke and I went with it. The water being about shoulder deep.
After getting over to the other bank, my other friend was still in the middle of the ice with the canoe that had just tipped, so while I tried to not freeze to death my friend on shore managed to pull my friend on the ice to shore where we regrouped on shore, we got a grill going so we could warm up. We emptied the canoe of all the water and changed into dry(er) clothes that hadn't gotten too wet when the canoe tipped. We began to explore to see what the best way to get out of our shitty situation was going to be, we were at least a mile from 3 different roads that surrounded us.
We thought that if the river opened up ahead we would go that way which lead to a road, which would have been the fastest way to a road. We went as far as we could on the island we were on, and saw that is was still ice for about 500 yards where it then turned behind a bend so we could no longer see it.
We noticed the house which was about 1000 yards away up on a hill, (which we later found out to be more of a mountain). We needed to some how get all of the stuff across the river and not fall in again, we managed to find a safe path and got across in about 10 minutes, we began our journey towards the house through the snow and forest. After about 20 minutes of trekking through the woods we got to the houses back yard which was a giant clearing. We now had a 200 yard mountain to climb to get to where the house was.
We had over 150 pounds of stuff to haul up this massively long and steep hill, we started up the hill and made it a fourth of the way up before sitting and taking a break. We were exhausted, cold and wet. One of my friends was wearing sandals and I was wearing snow filled shoes. The third friend had on boots. While we rested we decided that we would pull the canoe filled with every thing up will all three people then after a while bring the kayak up to where we had progressed. This worked much better and was much faster.
We made it up to about 3/4's of the way up the hill when we decided to take a break and have the third friend go grab the kayak. After he made it up to where we were we got the canoe up to the house as fast as we could. We made it up to the house and I went down and grabbed the kayak. We again rested for a short time before moving on towards the closest road. We made it to the front yard of the house where the owner of the house was working on his car, he asked us what happened, after we told him he went right back to working on his car. Offering us no help. We proceeded to try and hitch hike.
Everyone must have thought we were joking because no one stopped and all we got were thumbs ups back. After about 10 minutes two people we knew just happened to be driving by. (We were miles away from our home town and way out in the country) They gave us a ride to my truck which was only a quarter mile down the road. We went and got my third friend's truck at our supposed ending spot while the second friend stayed with all of our stuff. We got back to our third friend where we loaded everything up and proceeded home exhausted and freezing. This left me with extremely cut up knees and legs, and a broken phone due to water damage and a great lesson that taught me to never do anything like that again because IT FUCKING SUCKED.
TLDR: Read it you lazy fuck it's worth your time.
