What's your set up? Where do you usually golf and do you play competitively or just go out and have a good time with friends?

I play highschool and have callaway razr x irons, a cobra s9? I think driver, an old odyssey putter and callaway 5 and 3 wood.

Definitely agree with you there. If you get fit into a stock shaft, that damn well better be the one you choose. Multiple PGA pros that are PING staffers use stock shafts, several were using the stock Titleist shafts last year. Simply because they worked. There are a few clubs I'd play with the stock shaft if I ever ordered anything new. Buuuut I just order things used, then piece it together for quite a bit cheaper than I could buy it new.

To be a scratch player do you think it is important to be able to draw or fade the ball both ways whenever you want to? Can you?

It is certainly important to be able to do on some level, but there are much more important things I would worry about. Without being overly cliche the things that will help you become scratch are solid contact with your irons, getting up and down, and avoiding three putts. I would keep track of how many greens in regulation you hit during a round and try and improve on that rather than worry about how many draws/fades you hit in a round. I may be oversimplifying things here but if you keep the ball in play, bogeys only come from hitting the green and three putting, or missing the green and not getting up and down.
I'd be interested to hear others thoughts on this, I may be way off but I'm currently a 2 handicap and I pretty much only hit a draw. I can fade it but I dont find it absolutely crucial to be able to, at least at my level and the courses I play.

I 100% agree, but I am a 13 handicap so take that for what it is. I keep track of fairways, GIR, and putts as well as score every round and I notice that my best rounds come with keeping the ball in play and avoiding 3 putts. I typically hit a fade on target and my mishits come in the form or pulls and slices. Days that I struggle with keeping the ball in play are days I score poorly. Days that I struggle inside of 50 yards are also days I score poorly. If I can minimize bad putts, not getting up and down, and generally keeping the ball in play I will shoot ~10 strokes better than a day I struggle with any one of those.

I think you need to be able to shoot low 80's almost every round before you worry about getting more crafty than that, no matter how fun it is to draw/fade the ball at will on the driving range.

first time out in 3 weeks today, been real busy with finals and working and such and i may have played the worst round of my life hahah. 54 on the front and i was at 31 after the 14th on the back and we just said fuck this just gonna mess around on the last few holes.

i really need to do something though, im just not getting much better doing what ive tried so far. are lessons the answer? or just go to the range a bunch? a lot of you guys seem to know your shit and im open to anything ahah just want to be able to shoot around 40, and make the team in the fall season.

and i need a driver too, should i go get "fitted" at dicks or golftown and buy a brand new expensive club or can they suggest some older models and i buy it off 3balls or 2ndswing for cheap?

I hit the ball out of the driving range dude. ANd I don't relatively speaking hit driver as far as my irons. My PW is what I take from 160-170. I need stiffer shafts than stock dude. DOESN'T FUCKIN MATTER THAT I AM A HACKER.

I just gave an explanation of buying clubs to help yourself. I have been golfing 15 years and like an idiot tried to learn on top of the line taylor made forged clubs as a kid. That was stupid. Even forgiving Mizzies were too much for me last year.

I can't hit a 5/6 iron. I have a hybrid instead.

7/8 irons I am inconsistent with. I got the regular not the pro.

9 and shorter I can handle a good club.


Project X and Callaway are the same company.


Check out this auction, I got Project X 95 flighted shafts on my custom made irons and it cost the SAME thing as the standard crappy TT dynamic golds. Since they are flighted its a no brainer to go X-Stiff because thats hardly stiffer than a normal stiff non flighted shaft.

IDK if I could handle something like a KBS Tour 6.5 or 7.0 extra stiff shaft on my irons. I am sure I'd be more tired by the end of the round if I had them. So I went with the flighteds.

Shaft is more important than club head.

For my driver I got the special edition Ricky Fowler all orange Cobra Amp. It was sick I only paid 280 and it had a whiteboard on it and they tried to sell them for 5 bills. But it didn't come in X-Stiff just regular stiff. So since I don't rock X-Stiff on my driver I really didn't want my irons being stiff as fuck so thats why I got the flighteds.

Nothing to fit for a driver in terms of length/lie adjustments. Just need to decide if you want regular flex or stiff flex. If you are in HS and getting stronger and are average size dude or bigger get stiff. Don't get stiff if you aren't somewhat big or don't swing extremely hard though. I'd make that decision on your own, sometimes the machines that determine your swing speed can lead you astray.

I'd recommend last years cobra amp drivers. Prefer them to the new Amp Cell the adjustable thing is overrated. Or go Callaway but this years X Hots are insane get a 2013 if you can swing it. If you get the pro it comes with a sick ass shaft.

I don't like Titliest TM or Ping personally for woods but many do. I have heard great things about Mizuno's woods so maybe try them if you can find a bargain.

I always loved the titliest drivers that i had (982, 905, 905r, 910d2) and from what i could tell hitting the 913 i liked it a lot, but last year i went to get fitted for a low spin driver and ended up with the ping i20. I hated the rocketballz driver but i also expected to hate the I20 because i didnt like the rapture i had hit before. You really just have to try things out and see what you like.


anyways, can someone explain the difference between blades and non-blade irons to me. I've always wondered but never really understood what the pros and cons are. I got mizuno mp62's and i think theyre blades

I think a blade is meant to be smaller clubhead and more of a players club.

Non blade is going to be a cavity back and perimeter weighted iron.

There might be a better more accurate explanation than that but I think thats it.

This is actually incorrect. Driver DEFINITELY needs to be fit in terms of length, and if you really want to get in depth you can go lie adjustments. The shaft flex is not the only factor to be decided on either. You need to take into consideration shaft characteristics, how they work with your swing, and what flex in a specific shaft matches what you're looking for.

You dont need to swing extremely hard for a stiff flex. Not in any case. A 100mph SS is more than enough for most stock stiffs. Its just that the different heads available amongst all brands give different qualities, and then each shaft offering tweaks that performance slightly to work with your game. Get on a monitor, try a lot of stuff, see what gives you the best numbers. Then, if at all possible, actually TAKE IT OUTSIDE. Results outside are far and away different than what you get on a monitor, and before you really decide to spend the big $ you need to actually take the club for a test drive. However, if you do some research, you can find some older models that will often times produce results much like you get with current drivers.

I hate the X Hot pro stock shaft. The PXv plays SO soft to flex. I can't even get a 6.5 to cooperate with my swing. The XHP driver is pretty sick, but the headweight is super low, which makes playing it at a shorter length near impossible unless you hotmelt or add a tip weight to the new shaft. The X Hot series as a whole though is phenomenal. My 3 deep fairway is a beast. I prefer the Razr Fit Xtreme though, which is why I game it.

Also, I'm sorry, I can't believe that you hit your pitching wedge 170 yards. Maybe if there's a 30mph wind behind you going downhill quite a ways. A 170 yard pitching wedge is some Jamie Sadlowski shit, and hes won the world long drive championships two times I believe.

I played mp62's for a while as well. Phenomenal irons, but they are actually what they refer to as a player's cavity back, as there is a slight amount of perimeter weighting. True blades are when no perimeter weighting is present, with the majority of mass on the sweet spot. Mp-68's and 69's are what they consider true blades. The placement of mass on the clubhead makes it "slightly" easier to shape the ball whichever way, but nowadays player's cavities and modern blades are so similar you cant tell too much of a difference. Modern blades are actually fairly forgiving for what they are, compared to blades in the 1980s where your hands felt like they broke on every mishit.

correction, majority of mass BEHIND the sweet spot. It also has to do with placement of center of gravity, and other technical aspects that I dont know all to well nor do I care about.

160 for sure its PW 170 is between PW and a 9. I don't pull out the 8 unless I am pretty close to the 200 yard marker and a 7 is my 195-210 club. I am a big dude, its not all that its cracked up to be having crazy length. And I don't really translate it to the driver really don't crank it over 300 much unless its down hill or something. I'm not that good of a golfer I can't shoot low scores not trying to impress anyone if I wanted to exaggerate and tack on extra distance I'd do it with how long I hit driver.



Good stuff to know the Xhotpro stock shafts aren't that great. I was seriously butthurt that the 6 hybrid didn't come with it. The one thing that is great about that club though it it goes so damned high that there is never any roll and it always sticks the greens on long par 3s 210-225. X hot hybrids are amazing now that you say the Pro shaft sucks if I get another hybrid I'll just buy the regular X hot and then reshaft that and the 6.

I mean, I dislike the regular X Hots even more haha. The XHP shaft is whippy, the X hot shaft is even whippier. But eh. I hit the hybrids but much prefer the Mp650 and its lack of any offset. Just works so much better for me. Yeah, I have pretty consistent power and get it well over 300 quite a bit. GPS'd one at 343 last week one a flat hole with no wind. But usually solid drives for me are around 315-320, and I average probably right around 295-305. I agree with you though, I hit it really far, but could give less of a shit if it doesnt translate to great scores. I'm playing to about a -3 right now, and this year play has been phenomenal and its quickly dropping. However, I'd love to hit the ball 265 all day long if I could play to a +3 hahaha.

whommpy, i hit the x hot in a non stock x stiff, i think it was a fubuki, or mabey a dia. but it actually fellt very hot, like it just wanted to spring the ball off,i do agree the stock shaft sucks. but i hit a g25 with a sr flex 285 today it was an intersting beast.

shot a 93 yesterday that easily could have been mid 80s if i didnt miss so many short putts, greens were rolling so fast and i 3 putted like every other hole. hitting a taylormade 3 rescue off the tee now, not quite the distance of a driver but i can consistently get 210 ish yards and be in the fairway and im happy with that aha

The X Hot line is seriously good, why else would I be bagging the X Hot 3 deep haha. Yeah, either the Fubuki or Diamana are great shafts, and both will play great. Very different shaft characteristics, but both great. If it was a hybrid, I'm guessing it was a Fubuki. At least you were able to get them as a stock offering for no upcharge, which is FANTASTIC. You had to go through custom options on their website and order through them, but they offered the Fubuki ax 400h for no additional fee the last time I checked. At least for the X Hot Pro hybrid they did. That shaft in X-Flex should work pretty well for ya.

I got a pre-release Callaway MackDaddy2 wedge in the mail today. Completely unexpected, it just arrived on my doorstep. Stamped with my username on another website, and a letter from Roger Cleveland the designer. Seriously phenomenal wedge. They get released July 12th, so anybody looking for a wedge needs to check em out. Never gotten free golf equipment in my life, so little to say I was pretty damn stoked haha.

Going to Tennessee for a week here, still shooting right around even par majority of my rounds, but the weekend I get back I've got a tournament. Hopefully that goes well, especially after a week of not playing.

hey wompuscat (or anyone else) I was just curious as to your thoughts on getting x100 shafts instead of wedge flex in my wedges. Advantages, disadvantages? always been curious about this. Also shot a pretty solid 74 yesterday with 2 lost balls.

alrighty, i play a set of nike victory red irons like tiga wooz with the titleist Vokey 60/56/54 degrees wedges and a vrs driver (no woods for me) as well as an odyssey white hot putter. As for skill level and location, I work at Carlisle Golf and Country club where im a scratch to +4 golfer from the tips or dragons fire with a +4 to +10 on a bad day and I try to enter as many local charity tournaments as I can.

Solid round man. I actually am putting KBS C-Taper X in my wedges, and was consider X100 or S400 for a while, but ultimately decided to stick with whats in my irons.

Whats in your wedges currently? Just stock wedge flex, DG Spinner? Whichever, I personally hated them both. Way to inconsistent and light, and just led to overall making the wedge game more difficult. The major difference moving to X100's would be the feel, and the launch. Your launch will be lower, and the feel will be heavier, and more stout than any wedge flex would give you. Currently I've got an S400 in the one wedge I play seriously, and its good and greatly improves the consistency of contact, but just has a feel that I dont like. Same goes for all Dynamic Gold shafts though. Honestly though, your spin wont be horrendously different. Switching from the Spinners to the S400 I saw a relatively big increase in spin, simply because I was actually hitting the wedge properly 95% of the time after the switch. Spin on chip shots mainly relies on how you hit the ball, whereas getting the ball on a higher or lower will be easier or more difficult based on the shaft. With full shots the shaft will affect the spin more, and dynamic gold shafts are relatively high spinning in terms of iron shafts so you shouldnt have any lack of spin with the X100 as long as your swing can handle the shaft.

meh i always felt that DG's were lower to medium spin shafts, project x's were a little lower, kbs tour's a little higher than dg's, c-tapers super super low. something to look into also is the true temper tour issue's. i'd put them in between the dynamic golds and the c-tapers. for me the ctapers were never a viable option in neither wedges nor irons because they knuckleball too often. ctapers are really for the exceptionally fast swinger who needs some serious help knocking down spin. even most better players will not benefit at all from ctapers, so dont think they are the end all be all for high end iron shafts. different shafts load differently and see which one you think feels the best and gets decent spin numbers

Oh I know, I've hit pretty much everything out there haha. Actually, the dg tour issues are the same as regular dynamic gold's, they just have tighter weight tolerances, down to + or - 1g I believe? Well, I only played kbs tour for a short while a couple years ago, felt great but way too high launching and spinning. I find dg to be low launch, moderately high spin, PX for me had slightly higher launch with mid low spin. Was most recently playing the PX 6.5. I just reshafted with C taper X flex approximately a month ago in my irons and they are incredible FOR ME. S+ could have handled my swing, but I like a bit More stability. I have no trouble loading them, and get a nice high trajectory that I can control higher or lower, and shot's have lower spin and penetrate through wind but stop faster on greens than any shaft I've used. Not the typical result, but they fit me perfectly. I agree though, definitely not the end all be all for iron shafts, but for me they are haha. Granted, I swing my 6 iron as fast as a large portion of the Golfing community swings their driver. So that's why they work for me, but I'd say for most People go s300s. They're seriously awesome shafts, and I'd be happy to play em, but swapping gear is a hobby and if I like the c taper better I figure why not haha.

Standard length should be perfect if she's 5'7 as women's clubs are meant to fit between 5'5 and 5'9 so that puts her smack in the middle. If you want a cheap used driver try ebay but dont buy unless its from a highly recommended place. Callaway golf pre-owned off ebay has some pretty inexpensive drivers that would work great (Example). Unfortunately I dont know much about women's drivers as far as specific brands being better or worse but since I work at a golf course i can say that Taylormade, Ping and Callaway all seem to be pretty popular amoungst the ladies (at-least in my area).

On another note shot 69 today with a hole out from 120 and I am pumped.

Just ordered a set of Callaway Razr X Forged! 4-PW with the PXI 6.0 shaft. So stoked. Finally upgrading from my old ass burners...


Anyone else play with these?

Burner 2.0. I got mine at the beginning of last year for 140 used and i'm sure it's cheaper now. I think it's still the nicest Taylormade driver out there

nice! both my buddies have the razr x wedges (52, 56, 60) and ive hit those a few times and they are sweet. i like them slightly better than my victory red wedges.  one has the prototypes from a couple years ago and ive hit those a couple times and they are pretty sweet. i can imagine the razr x's are pretty awesome as well.

i play with the vr blades tho and they are slightly heavier in the head so ive really gotten used to those over the lighter callaways

played at a private exclusive rich snobby people club today with my friend who's a member, course was really fun and in perfect condition but fuck that shit, did not have a good vibe. i can carry my bag from my car to the first tee i dont need someone to do it for me hahaha. surprised there wasnt someone in the bathroom to wipe my ass for me. pretty wierd being a caddy/ cart attendant and seeing the course operations from the other point of view.

ha my buddy and i have played some really awesome courses like that and its only if we're with a member or get a screamin deal online, and everytime we just park ourselves, grab our own bag and as we get close to the bag drop some douchey lookin character comes runnin out like we broke all the rules. classic

Out of curiousity (and jealousy), has anyone played merion? After watching the open, it has become one of my favorite courses to watch on tour. If it wasnt $300 to play a round, id for sure make the trip down there.

i played once in january, 3 times in february, and one round in march so far. my goal this year is to golf at least once in every month this year.

Gotta love reno weather. this weekend is a ski weekend because its snowing in the mountains a little but it will be golf time by next week again no problem.

So i just recently got a one day a week job at this golf course just about an hour outside of hood. Its a pretty cool gig. I see a ton of cars with skiing stickers so if anyone comes to Mtn.View and is on ns hmu! I could prob hook you up with some free range tokens or something like that.
