physics > geology, but there would be no reason to mention it if a dirt-person wanted to make a geology thread. They already have it tough enough considering you could train a monkey to do surveying now that we have satellites and advanced software and all that stuff.
I'm a little confused with your post but yes they are completely different. I would probably major in geophysics if I was better in physics.. I'm still thinking about it though.
monkeys would have to master some basics like, i dunno, speech probably before we could teach them remotely anything about geography. how you gonna teach a monkey where argentina is if he cant even comprehend argentina existing. unless hes a monkey from argentina anyways.
i will make the first related post in this thread by saying
ive thought about majoring or doing something with geography in college cause ive always had an interest in travel and mountains and maps and such but is it worth it? like are there legitimate careers you can get into by studying geography pretty much. anyone majoring or minoring in it or whatever and have something to say about that?
Get into GIS/mapping and planning. You use a lot of statistics and such. You could get a job with the forest service mapping out fires, and predicting where they'll go so you can send the fire fighters where they need to be. Same concept for city and highway planning.
There actually are lots of cool jobs and it's a cool subject. Don't listen to me at all, I'm just kidding around.
Just make sure you pick a focus. Geography is one of those degrees where you can bullshit your way through it if you want. If you pick a certain direction (or double major in earth science, biology, computer science, etc) then you can do a lot of cool shit.
my summer job is a student position in the engineering dept for my county and i have interacted a decent amount with the GIS folks and seen what they do.
if you are planning on going into GIS, try to get something with the national/provincial parks or conservation authority or something of the likes because the GIS guys in the county office have the most boring job there. they just update the satellite online map service and print off these massive topo maps of certain small areas whenever we are planning project.
so yes GIS has potential to be interesting but I have seen first-hand the boring side of it. their office is a windowless cubicle farm in the centre of the building too. and it smells weird in there, theyre with all IT people too.
