'05 WRX vs. '05 GTI VR6

Nice suggestion, hadn't thought of that.....Although I heard that the 00-03 VW's had a slew of electrical problems due to bad window/door seals that were resolved with the 04-05's. Also, I'm not sure that I can afford to own a car with 18" rims between the tire prices and my tendency to drive on back roads.

I'm not too sure about the electrical differences between mkiv years.. but I just know how meticulous most of the 20th ae guys are (you should check out the for sale forum at www.vwvortex.com).

fyi, vr6's get damn good gas mileage, better than a 1.8T.

1.8T my brother had got around 22-25mpg
My 1997 vr6 passat wagon got 23-26mpg w over 180k
My brothers 1998 vr6 gti gets 26-33mpg on mtn passes.

From what I've seen, the vr6 is more reliable as well. They've been making that engine since the early 90's.

It comes down to what feeling you want to get when you drive. -A WRX feels like ur in a stripped track car except you're not (shitty interior, zero sound deadening, cheap shit everywhere).
-A GTI feels much nicer, drives nicer, but won't be as fast, though they're still pretty quick. You'll have little things go wrong that will cost $300+ at the dealer, but do it yourself and sometimes its

correct, after 25 years it can however. Certain ways around them, but a b5 rs4 for instance goes for around 20k for a clean example, expect so spend another 20 to get it into the country legally

word ^ but generally the procedure of completely disassembling a car, importing it as 'parts' or 'kit' and then reassembling it while still under scrutiny of the feds (not to mention trying to get it legitimately licensed etc) is a huge expensive pain in the ass. this process is pretty inhibitive for your average enthusiast, not to mention a random kid in NS who has no clue.

If you can get a WRX STI do that. I already have 15 grand saved, I'll have 35 grand for either a 2012 STI or EVO next fall. Building logging roads spring, summer, and fall has its perks.

i love volkswagens to death, and i own my second one right now, but get the WRX. unless of course you are prepared for the VW to break and to spend a lot more after buying it.

never can go wrong with awesome AWD especially in the winter and you can rice it out without looking like a fag and not be in a girly golf but both well be pretty expensive

I've owned both cars (more or less).

I had a 95 GTI VR6 and I currently have a 02 wrx that I've owned since 2007.

Seeing as how both these cars are heavy among the tuner world. I would recommend posting a picture of the car you want to buy, VW on vwvortex.com and wrx on Nasioc.com. Ask if anybody knows who's car that is (by username) and then perform a search on that username. Look at any threads he/she created involving modifications or problems with the car. This will give you a good history on it outside of carfax. For example, many people claim their car has never been modded, and you find out after you by it that it has been through the ringer.

In either case I would highly suggest buying a completely stock vehicle, hard to come by given your two options.

As for the vehicle choice, I would go with the WRX. My GTI had electrical problems around 100k. Maintenance on it is much more tedious compared to a WRX, simple things such as rotating the tires (wheel studs) and lot of the tools needed are allen heads compared to normal wrenches.

My wrx has been very reliable with only performing regular maintenance (I am modded to stage 2). Also I get about 24-26 mpg on the highway. However, you do need to put at least 91 octane in a wrx according to Subaru.

BUT! The number one reason I can give you to buy a wrx over a GTI is that you won't have to get out and put chains on during a snow storm.
