Your take on POV edits..?

I don't have a lot of people to film with, but I do have a GoPro. I've made mainly POV edits, like so:

But what's your opinion? I have a DSLR that I've been putting some more time on, but it doesn't do much help when you're headed to the mountain solo.

Do people mind POV edits? Or are they just overdone? Andrew Whiteford got his big break from POVs, but that's because they're awesome.

Should I just focus on GoPro? DSLR? or mix?

POV needs to be done very well for it too work. Even then it's best to have a couple different angles.

On the East coast specifically, only works in the trees or on really gnarly (mostly rare) runs. Out west you have a lot more options.

POV in general doesn't work for park unless it is like 10% of the edit.

That edit was sick. My view on edits is, really when your using a gopro to make them you should be pretty good and throwing down. The angle of gopros make simple unstylish tricks look terrible. Same thing with pov videos, there are a lot of gopro pov vids out there of people just hitting groomers. Thats cool, its just not fun to watch. But some awesome bc or park city laps are awesome to watch. My favorite edits are ones shot with dslr though.

I liked that edit a lot! As long as POV edits are entertaining and have some multiple angles, they can make a pretty quality viewing experience. Just because they have become super mainstream, doesn't make it any less cool when done properly.

Good song choice there, and some biig hits/tricks. props.

Yeah that edit was rad. Personally I love watching POV edits when it's pow, some of my favourite edits to watch. Only pow though, park gets confusing and you can't see half the stuff.

I think that pov pow edits are sick but anything else is pretty stupid. Also, if it isn't slowed down, the footage looks awful.

Ya this is pretty true, Your edit was sick though. My favorite POV to watch is pillow lines, but it is also great for huge cliffs and hucking big tricks like you did. It is definitally harder on the east because we don't have as many cliffs or options in general to use to make it interesting.

I prefer a third-person angle pretty much 100% of the time, but I use my GoPro on big mountain stuff a lot of the time too, especially when I'm shredding by myself. If you're out there sending it, you might as well get in on film right?

But better skiing=better edit is what is obviously comes to all of the time, the angle is secondary. And that my friend, was great skiing. Like someone else posted, it's nice to balance the pov with other angles. So you did a good job of that too.

So great edit anyways mostly because of the skiing, I'm not the biggest fan of the song but who cares. Don't really worry about messing with your other camera unless you have a filmer who is willing to set up the camera to get a nice shot constantly. I doubt that's the case so keep killing it, press the button and just ski.

I challenge this. I think if done right there can be exceptions.

I think most people dont think you can make pov or even go pro edits look good. A large majority of this edit is pov and go pro footage. All you need is a little planning and some editing/color correcting skill and time.

dont have the time at the moment to watch your edit; but in general i enjoy POV edits done right(mostly surrounded by powder and some sick lines/cliffs) but some can just piss me off to no end

if you can't see your skis and the horizon in the shot, it makes horrible POV footage. Pisses me off more than vertical video.

it's all about balance. Yours has a good mix of POV, 3rd person, and pole-cam so it's a good variety.

Plus you had tons of trees, powder and cliffs which are the best to watch pov. It's cool to see certain tricks thrown pov, but usually you see nothing but the horizon spinning, then the tips/tails hitting the ground.

Well yeah, the majority of that edit was follow cam with a gopro. A gopro doesn't immediately make it POV.

While there were some first person shots it was mixed in with lots of follow cams and stuff which is what kept it good.

I think POV on rails when done right is absolutely insane. Jumps, even if you know what you're doing, always seem kinda hectic and jerky. Just my thoughts.
