will someone please explain why a sick and true park skier beat one of the best back country skiers? petitt shouldve won in my opinion

Because Sammy is one of the sickest back country skiers of all time. That's how he beat one of the sickest backcountry skiers of all time.

It was a contest based around park tricks in the backcountry. The judging was done correctly for the format. You can hate the format all you want, but it would have been much more difficult to judge a pure backcountry (shreddin lines and pillows with nothing built) contest.

Have you watched Sammy ski at all the past few seasons? The backcountry segs he puts out with PBP are top notch. I don't like Sammy but his real snow seg was insane and deserved to win

Definitely a close one... I personally enjoyed Petitt's more because it seem like it was more bc lines, deeper pow and natural hits. Sammy's definitely had more of a jib feel to it which was dope too.

i just think its ridiculous that a true back country skier that only competes in back country competitions didnt win as oppose to sammy who is one of the best PARK skiers in the game won they both put out sick segments ill admit

The contest was judged on the segments, not on your subjective perception of how much time a certain skier spends in the park or the backcountry. If the latter were the case, we could have picked a winner without even having to watch any edits, couldn't we?

“The first thing we were looking for were tricks,” said Mike Douglas, X Games Real Ski judge. “We wanted to see big tricks like we would see in [X Games] slopestyle, but in nataural terrain.” The second thing judges were looking for was creativity. “Using terrain in ways people don’t usually think of,” Douglas explained. And lastly? A good tune, “Something that makes you feel good.”

What makes Sammy’s win all the more impressive is the fact that he suffered a broken ankle while shooting for the contest—just four days before the start of X Games Aspen, in fact, which he was forced to sit out of as a result of the injury.

Just because Sammy skis park and does more (park) competitions than Pettit doesn't make him a "true park skier".

True, whilst Sean is an incredible skier, he isn't the most well rounded of skiers.

IMO, he may be one of the most well rounded skiers, can do doubles and ski big lines, Sammy's just slightly better on booters
