Who knows about/has been to the South?

Anyone been on a trip through the South? Not so much looking for big tourist attractions, but more of "off the beaten path" southern towns, cool little attractions like alligator parks and shit like that.I'll be heading down to New Orleans from the DC area in the beginning of June amidst our "round the country" road trip and I definitely wanna soak up some of the south on the way. Particularly looking for stuff to do in West Virginia/Virginia area, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Make sure to stop off at a Waffle House. Finest dining institution on the Eastern Seaboard, emphasis very much on institution.

my family used to go to Alabama a lot. Here is what you need to know: about an hour out of Birmingham northwards are towns that you would feel like would only be in movies. Like, the accents are incredibly strong, the food is incredibly bad, and the people are definitely different. Its still cool though. Eat at a Cracker Barrel (Is that just the South? I've never noticed one anywhere else from what I remember.)

Haha lucky OP! I'm goin' to SC this summer and VA... Never been to LA before, those deeper southern states seem pretty cool, wanna go there sometime.

Only eat waffle house as a last resort. They are open 24 hours, its nice at 3am. You can do a lot better finding some local joint. Try some deep fried catfish and hush puppies. I tried deep fried gator, but I hated it. If you get a chance check out the Savannah historical district.

Aw man I am seriously torn about how I'm getting to Atlanta this weekend. No clue to fly or drive. Leaving the Thursday after for Switzerland. Just can't decide what to do.

My boy from Syracuse who lives there is a fucking lifelong homer Michigan fan, and after the bs they got against KU and me being terrified of playing the Wolverines if Burke and Stauskas get hot and shoot over our zone now I don't really wanna stay with that nigga.

I prepaid the entire weekend at the W because the Syracuse team is staying there and I like being in the sam hotel as the team. I just got no clue what I am doing or how I'll get there, and IDK if I want to bring a girl or not. (Or if I wanna cram into the room with my boys.)

Fuckin can't decide and make plans its annoying.

If you get off the main roads there's plenty of hiking to be done, isn't that hard to find especially if you have some sort of internet device. You could probably camp that way for some of the trip.

Sometimes I've just parked my car and gone up in the woods randomly and set up the tent. Probably found upon but nobody's ever done anything to me.


The blue ridge parkway is a pretty solid drive. Not a super sketchy back road but it still gets you out there pretty good.

If you're 21 and there are any breweries/distilleries you like you could tour a couple of those.

But the camping hiking thing is always a good bet for saving some funds. Sometimes if you stop you can hit up the information places and they can recommend you some pretty awesome shit that you didn't even know was there. Some random caverns, epic waterfall, or whatever you're into.

What don't I find appealing is a better question? Sure there's no making maple syrup, ice fishing, or skiing... But they have some things that I don't here.

I was stationed in Gulfport, Mississippi for a few years about an away from New Orleans. Spent so many weekends there partying. Epic place for sure.

Def hit up a Cajun Swamp tour. I think it is near Slidell, La. Other than that, small towns will be the nothingness ya imagined the south to be. Plenty of nice scenario though. Not very helpful with specifics because I spent a huge chunk in the deeeep south, not in your path.

As far as in New Orleans, be careful just a block away from bourbon..and hit up the bourbon cowboy and fat cats. Stay away from strip clubs

Smokey Mtn National Park is a great place to see.

Also the Biltmore Estate in NC is worth checking out if you dont mind paying admission

I'm from Nashville and lived there for 15 years so i feel the need to comment on this. FUCK YA GO DIXIE

i have nothing helpful though, maybe Sumner Mississippi. the real start of the civil rights movement was right by there and its a beautiful, self sustaining town.

Thanks brotha. I was actually looking at a couple of National Forests/Parks that are about halfway between DC and New Orleans. Specifically the Cherokee National Forest (TN) or the Nantahala National Forest (NC). Pretty much looking for spots that are along that route that wedges its way between TN and NC and heads down to New Orleans from DC. Where is a good spot to hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway? Definitely wanna check that out.
