Prop 8 and the Defense of Marraige Act

Prop 8 (California's ban on same sex marriage) is being argued in the Supreme Court today

The constitutionality of the Defense of Marraige Act is also being contended.

Where does NS stand on this issue? Do you think there will be any short or long term effects of these decisions (other than gay people getting married)?

Hopefully someone will bring up the Declaration of Independence and the whole "all men are created equal," and "unalienable rights," and "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" thing. Should clear up the issue pretty quick. Not sure why no one has thought of doing so yet, it seems pretty simple.

This is america even if you don't like gay people (not saying i don't)you have the right to do what ever you want as long as your not hurting anyone. If your against gay marriage now you most likly would have been against interracial marriage in the 50's-60's.

He didn't "claim" that. Obviously it's not true since gay marriage isn't legal. He believes that. As in he may believe marijuana isn't dangerous and should also be made legal, even if it isn't currently.

America is supposedly the "land of the free." As in people SHOULD be able to do what they want. People being bigoted doesn't change the supposed vision and foundation of a country. Saying that America is supposed to be a place where people can do what they like as long as they are not hurting or endangering others is hardly a false premise

Okay, fine. You say gays kissing while driving is dangerous and so you should ban gay kissing all together. You somehow failed to realize that kissing is only dangerous when you drive, and there's already a law for that, careless driving. If a cop sees you driving and making out with the person sitting next to you, you're going to get pulled over. Obviously that doesn't mean there is a need to ban it all together. There. Done with this now, this is supposed to be about gay marriage and you, for some unfathomable reason, are arguing about legalizing marijuana. 1. gay sex is icky
2. mommy said god hates gay people and they should go to hell
3. it's unnatural, i mean why would your precious evolution create gays? it makes no sense. they had to be brought up that way
4. marriage is a sacred sacrament and gays would rip that apart.

you all need to get out of the bronze age and wake the fuck up

SCOTUS is hearing about these two issues, but they are already law. Prop 8 and DOMA both exist.

Marriage in the sense of a sacrament binding two souls for eternity is a religious idea and therefore should have no laws permitting or restricting it.

Marriage in the sense of a legal binding that gives couples legal benefits that simplify their lives should be extended to all people. If it isn't it's discrimination.

In order to render a decision on gay marriage, I believe the court must first define marriage.

Yea man because passing this bill would def affect your life right?

Put yourself in their shoes, you find someone you love, you want to spend the rest of your life with them, but legally you cannot get married to them because they happen to be the same gender as you. Now you're not allowed a shit load of legal rights that marriage gives you, and pretty much your life with your partner is a lot more difficult legally than a straight couple.

Pretty sad day we actually have to argue that all Americans in this country deserve the right to be treated equally. In particular after all the inequality (slavery, voting rights, etc) we have overcome we are stuck on this minor issue now? Unbelievable, people will look back on this in 20 years or so and be like wtf were we thinking.

But we can all thank ignorant dbags like this kid who think he is legally superior to certain individuals just because he is straight.
