Plastic lattice is faster and you don't really have to wet it down, but it is damn near impossible to turn on unless you are into that shreadsauce style of "buttering", but you are more or just sliding around out of control. Orange fence on top of carpet is slower and you can turn on it a bit better if need be (carpet being the slowest and best of the three for edge hold). Problems are that your edges will cut it to shit and you will have to replace it, or deal with getting caught up in it (don't know if anyone else has dealt with that but it isn't too much fun) where lattice more or less stays good forever. Orange fence can be free if you know where to look (get the thick round stuff not the thin "snow fencing") but you have to have something underneath it (so add the cost of carpeting) and lattice only costs like $20 per 8x4 sheet.
The best combo in my mind is a lattice drop in with a carpet transition and jump, the lattice builds up the speed and the carpet gives you the control.
