Two New Canon DSLR's

Canon announced today the Rebel SL1 and the Rebel T5i. Both share the same 18.0 megapixel APS-C sensor. The T5i uses a DIGIC 5+ processor where the SL1 uses a DIGIC 5. The SL1 is being sold as the world's smallest and lightest DSLR.

New point and shoot also released. Able to shoot 1080p60p.

New Canon EF-S 18-55 STM lens also announced.

I've always wondered why is it easier to make a mirrorless camera/p&s shoot 1080p60 than a dslr?

t5i is NOT using a d5+, just a shit d5

it would be an insult if they put the perfection that is the digic 5+ in a fucking rebel

t5i has digic 5, not 5+
pretty much the same camera as the t4i

From DPReview :

"The only other significant change made over and above the 650D is the ability to preview and apply Canon's 'Creative Filter' processing effects at the point of shooting, rather than adding them as a post-shot process. This ability to preview the effect (as now offered on the majority of cameras), makes it easier to pre-visualize how the final result will look - helping to inspire the capture of images that only work well in conjunction with the processing effect."

Canonrumors reported iso 100-25600? I assume they meant 100-6400 with boost 12 and 25?

Examples of creative filters: Black and white, sepia, etc. basically instagram filters, all useless in camera.

Honest question: I have used my T1i for almost three years and am confident with the workings of (D)SLR cameras. I am trying to upgrade so I have video capabilities.

What should I get between anything from the SL1 to the t2i-t5i series to the 60d or another better option? I am in college. Cheaper is better to some extent.

Nah I mean in general, not brand specific. There's a lot of 1080p60 mirrorless/p&s cams, but few dslrs.

All about how the data is processed. most compacts have small sensors, and tend to compress the data a lot. Notice how most of those compact's video looks like shit

Yeah suppose so, but the gh3 manages very well, is that the exception? sure they have small sensors, but they're still have a high pixel count, so they have to bin a lot of them too.

yeah but what's making it difficult for the cheaper ones to do what the gh3 does? I don't see how you need more than less compression, faster buses and faster cards?

I'm still confused as to what you're asking. You keep using the GH3 and point and shoots interchangeably, stop. The gh3 has great quality 1080p60 because it uses a venus engine (quad core I think) processor and decent compression algorithm in camera. It's a $1300 body and is MEANT to record the high quality video.

The Point and Shoots (From sony, panasonic, etc) still manage to include 1080p60 as an afterthought, but destroy the image by limiting the data in the process to be manageable with whatever they use for cpu tech in those.

This is the first canon camera (not camcorder or 1dc) that to my knowledge does 1080p60. It's also with a newly announced processor, which i'm assuming is one of the first they've made that can handle it.

You mean the feature that none of their higher end cameras have? or are you talking about the "feature" being that the higher end cameras have an advantage in iq?

the cXXX series shoots 1080p 60 i believe, im talking about 1080p60. They could have it in their smaller cameras but I think they trying to keep it reserved for the really expensive cameras i mean fuck even a 5d doesnt have 1080p60. maybe they'll cave eventually and add it to a mid level/high level dslr but the t2i/7d series will never have 1080p60 until 1080p120 is common on a sub $3000 camera.

true, my point of view is the business side of the company where they don't de-value their higher end cameras and keep their HUGE fan base waiting as long as possible and they lose maybe what 5%? then when they finally deliver theyre the best company every again.

and your view point which is ignorant and thinks canon cameras arent capable of 1080p60 and other feature the camera doesnt have...

Because the sensor of a P&S is MUCH smaller. That's why FF camera's have lower FPS.

Not for the same price point they can't.

The T2i was the best thing Canon ever did: filmmakers MASSIVELY invested in Canon. Releasing a body that does 1080p60 will remind people why they stick with Canon. That's what needs to be done, it just hasn't been done. I'm pretty sure Canon is aware of this.

Yeah I know the whole sensor size thing, but I don't understand why the smaller the sensor the easier it is to have a high fps,

Lets say they have the same pixel count, why would the p&s be able to shoot faster than the dslr if they're both binning the same amount of pixels to get to 1080p? Is it because the larger sensor is getting more light per pixel? which means more data? or am I wrong? just doesn't make sense to me haha.

Seriously? It's been said multiple times, the P&S's having much less computing power and can not handle anything but a super compressed data stream. This means that not even magic could suddenly give you less compression when it's bottlenecked

Why is sony able to have 1080 60p in the A99 as a full frame sensor? Along with their lower end bodies as well and the T3,T4,T5i lines don't?
