So I am getting a new pair of skis this week due to I found a great deal on thalls. I am 5'5", 116 lbs and 16 years old. Should i get the 166 or 171 thalls? My season starts again for me in December. Would 171 be too long? Or would 166 be too short?(considering im going to grow a fair bit)
171s will be a bit big, but you'll appreciate the stability and you'll grow into them anyway. It would suck to get such a sick ski and then be pissed off about the length next season
But i guess it would be harder for me to learn tricks in the park? 360s and such with them being a little big? Also what would be best, to center mount them or -2,5,-2,-1 ect? I ride about 50% park,40% pist and 10% pow. Just want some solid opinions on it so im sure about it :)
If you are worried about growing than wait till september/october. The skis will not sell out and there will be some good deals by that time of year. If you are still 5'5" by then then depending on how much ski you think you can handle get a certain size. I usually size to my head when I buy skis. Right now I am 5'7" still growing and I ride a 172 fat-ypus L-Toro. If you are planning to ski mostly park than I would go for the shorter ski because you wont need the extra amount of ski to carve out large smooth turns.
If I were you I'd get the 171s. I'm a big fan of the extra length. It helps out a lot. And really, 5 centimeters won't make THAT much of a difference in spinning. If your skiing out of the park at all. I'd mount them at the Center of the Core. I think with the THalls. The core center is -2.5 of the running length of the ski. (core center= -2.5 of True center)
I had 176 THalls last year. And I definitely should have got them at 181 (I'm about 6' 1 or 2".) I also mounted them true center. They killed it in the park. But lacked a little in the all mountain due to where they were mounted. Hope that helps at all.
