ESPN is reporting she has a final in school tomorrow and wot compete because of that. It's on their twitter. This is completely legit and ever more disappointing.

Also I would argue that women's skiing has the highest amount of variance due to a higher chance of getting injuries with respect to men.

Also you further validated my argument by stating she is the only chick who can dub 12. Why would she leave when she is the clear favorite to win... Who knows if she will be the favorite next year.

Lets say she wanted to hurry up and get done with school so she could focus on x-games and the Olympics. Doesn't change the fact she just threw away the opportunity to win a gold medal now.

no one cares about x games in europe. it's a long ad show on tv with some action sport in it and espn doesn't care about the sport or the athletes(just watch all the second runs of mens elimination yesterday - blizzard hits the course, they still kept going, sammy calls it a joke, russ skipped every jump, wallisch, goepper, harlaut not in finals, ...). and please don't compare highschools in the US to highschools in germany.

good call of lisa to go home and finish school.

Maybe she wants to get school out of the way now? I cant believe people are calling her an idiot. Tom is the biggest name at skiing, he gets paid heaps from sponsors so can afford school later. I have my doubts shed be on similar salary atm. Also its free up until 18 here so maybe getting it out of the way is a good choice. She has years ahead of her, time is on her side. Just respect her opinion and let her get on with it

It's stupid to argue which choice is right. I'm sure she fought hard to try and get around taking the exam. She obviously tried to reschedule it or take it at a different time and they wouldn't let her. Who knows what kind of pressure her parents are putting on her as well.

The school system in the states is vastly different from the one in Germany. I assume that the oral test is part of what is known as "das Abitur".

This is a series of tests that all "High school" (high school isn't really the same thing over here as in America) students have to take in order to even have a chance to get into University. All last year students in the country take their "Abitur" by writing these tests during a period of 1-2 weeks. Everyone in the country who wants to write a particular subject (for example English) has to do it on the same day in order to prevent cheating.

As I said, these tests are a big deal as they greatly impact your chances of getting into Universities and can even make it or break it for you in terms of job offers later on. In Finland, where I live, you actually have to redo High School completely if you get caught cheating on this final exam. This is most likely the reason she can't reschedule or take the test over Skype.

Furthermore (again, I'm going of the Finnish school system here) some courses that are mandatory in order to even be allowed to take the finals can "expire" after a few years. This means that someone who takes 3 of these mandatory courses during their first year and then don't make it to the exam 3 years later actually have to redo all their hard work.

TL;DR. it might not be as easy as "just postponing the test". If this wasn't an Abitur test I don't understand what the problem was.

On the flip side of the coin, if her career were to end it would be really good to have an education to fall back on. In Europe some sorts of High school tests don't mean jack shit, while other sorts are really important in order to get a spot at a university. Maybe this test was of the important kind...

Still would have been sick to see a dub 12 in women's slope!

lol naah I'm not insane, I'm just pissed off all these virgins on this page bitching over someone who's a lot better than them. Of course she can pick up big sponsors, but I'm not shure if it will pay her bills forever, when your career ends due to injury or something the like, your sponsors are gone faster than you open a can o' Rockstar...

Your little American college is a bit less worth than some in Europe, believe me...

I'm about to graduate college and I know very well that the college itself doesn't lead to anything, but it's a good thing to have. If she can do it, she the fuck should do it.

Very polarizing decision and gutsy decision. I understand that many people do not understand her decision but why not support her? I am biased since I always chose school over skiing even though skiing is my one true passion. When I watch the X-games and see some guys I grew up skiing with competing, do I ever wonder what would happen if chose skiing or school? Of course I do. But, I wouldn't change a thing, I fucking love being medical school following another passion of mine.

And importantly, what I think many of you are missing is the success she already has achieved at such a young age. Doesn't that make you think that she is fully capable of making the right choice. If you read any books regarding success, or hell, watch any of the 100's of motivation youtube videos on youtube, you will realize that these are the hard choices successful people make. It's these decisions that separates them from everyone else. If I'd had to put money on what choice will pay off longterm, I'd rather go with her, than some overweight, opinionated small budget film producer that after reading these threads for over 10 years, guarantee will never reach the level she will get to.

So, good job Lisa, thats fucking rad you had the balls to make the decision.

y'all should calm down and show this chick some respect... not only in she the best girl park skier out at the moment.. but she's also mature enough to make the decision to put school first (even if when it super sucks)... but it means if she finishes school now that she'll be free next winter to destroy everything

also.. to whoever mentioned tom wallisch as an example on how to combine a ski career and an education... really? I mean hasn't he been working on his bachelor's for like 7 years now..??

Came here to post this. So many naive americans that assume school systems around the world are the same. We have the same thing in Australia, everyone in the state takes a standardised exam for each subject at a specific time on a specific date. There is no 'making it up' the only allowance they have is you can start 30 minutes later if you got into a car accident before the exam so that no one can know what is on the exam beforehand. You need to take these exams to not only pass high school but to have any shot of getting into even the lowest unis.

Either way, with Tanner Hall being the prominent figure he is in our sport, he shouldn't be coming into this thread and stating that her decision is "NOT SMART." It's quite a statement to make and it shouldn't be directed toward Lisa, it's not fair to her.

why is this even an argument? how could anyone possibly hate on this girl for skipping a skiing contest to take care of her education? nobody here knows the circumstances of why she HAD to take it, do you honestly think she didn't try to reschedule it? you're bantering like a bunch of retards. it shows an extreme amount of responsibility for a 17 year old, good for her.

You dont understand how government issued exam works outside of the US. You cant graduate without passing them and rescheduling them in Canada makes you take the exam 3-4 months afterward (wich means you wont have studied with a class/teacher for a while).

Your school system allows you to ski and study at the same time while some toehres dont.

You can play a lot with you class schedule in the US to have most of the winter off while most of us in Canada cant reschedule most of our classes because they have to be done before taking the next class and there are not that many summer classes available.

At the place where she lives the only option for postponement is severe illness along with a medical attest - hard to come by when same time competing publicly. Given that she definitely wanted to graduate she HAD to attend the exam to wrap up and be done with school short term, no matter what. So her choice was absolutely wise and mature in terms of pursuing her personal goal instead by all means staying at an event not many in Europe really care about. Nine Queens got WAY more media attention that X Games fwiw.

Not quite sure why so many consider her a favourite for events like X Games yet though. On her appearances at higher level events like FIS World Cup or recent Worlds she finished pretty much at the end of the pack for whatever reason and got her butt handed to her.

I haven't seen footage but... She won the Austrian open with Katie on the Podium. In Voss, she got a 22.8 on her first run in qualis which leads me to believe she fell and then didn't take her second run. In Silvaplana, 41.4 first run, 40.4 second run. It sounds like another fall to me. It seems to me like the only person that seems to have beaten lisa is herself.

That is exactly why it isn't a given that she would win X Games. The pressure at X Games is like no other competition...even for those who have been there many times before. And it will take more than throwing a dub 12 to win. Rails are 50% of the score and there are other challenges like the flow of the course, the combination of other jump tricks, gauging speed from one feature to the next, etc. Tiril's jumps were more difficult than Kaya's but Kaya had her grabs on lock on every single jump plus her rail tricks were more difficult. Dara has great jumps with grabs on lock but her rail game isn't as technical as either Kaya or Tiril. So I was very keen to see what Lisa Zimmerman throws in an entire slope run. I would have been cheering for her. I'm sure we'll see her competing in lots of comps all of next year, especially as she won't have high school in her way any more.

There is absolutely no reason to come into this thread to defend kaya and Tiril. Lisa is not a one trick pony and she did win one of the bigger slopestyles this year. Did we say that Lisa was a lock to win? No. Did we say that everyone else should be scared? Yes. What did your post accomplish? Nothing.

There's no reason to hype kaya right now. There wasn't a thread on the ladies comp. I don't even know if there was a post in the x games thread. If kaya had pulled out, there wouldn't have been a thread about it and this one is three pages long. What's that say about the state of women's skiing? I think it says skiing needs more Lisa.

Really? This sport is dominated by uncertainty. An unexpected injury can quickly destroy a career. Finishing school is the smartest decision that she could make.

She is also seventeen. This decision is not going to ruin her career, because it hasn't even begun. Zimmermann's best years are still ahead of her.

What's stupid is that wherever her retarded ass school is should have known how big this event is and helped her adapt her schedule to this event. They would probably do it for some bitch ass high school soccer game, so they should do it for the largest event in skiing as well.

Doesn't mean an entire country is going to re-schedule an exam thousands of people take to accomodate one girl competing in a small sports major competition... It's not the schools decision it would be the National education body.

Be realistic. Tanner was at the top of what was pretty much the beginning of the sport. It's a little bit different in this day and age with the saturation of people trying to break through.
And to compare this to dropping out of the joke that is the American education system is ludicrous.

Props to this chick for not betting her future on doing some spins on ski's.

Let's wait and see whether she will really attract some sponsors allowing her to show up on higher rated comps all over the globe next season. Her bag of aerial tricks alone doesn't quite seem to convince them of supporting her yet as long as she doesn't nail her runs at major events more consistently.

Hope this will change because it is odd to see quite a few girls with less talent being ahead of her at bigger venues and thus perhaps picking up stronger sponsorship.

she won 9 queens, has a grabbed dub 12 and cork 9 truck consistant, which arent really aerial tricks, and has one of the best rail games of a girl out there. so i dont know why you have a hard time believing shell pick up sponsors
